Pertamina Geothermal Energy is Eyeing Green Hydrogen Development as New Business Opportunity

4 hours ago | Green Industrial

Jakarta, INTI - PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy Tbk (PGE) is expanding the use of geothermal energy beyond electricity generation. This is done through direct use development for the industrial and agricultural sectors, as well as green hydrogen production.

Expanding Beyond Electricity Generation

PGE’s Director of Operations, Andi Joko Nugroho, said that geothermal has wider opportunities than just being a source of electricity generation. PGE is beginning to develop diversification in the use of geothermal energy.

"In the future, our focus will be on accelerating technological innovation, expanding geothermal utilization outside the electricity sector, and strengthening collaboration," said Andi at The 5th ITB International Geothermal Workshop 2026 on Monday, July 13, 2026.

According to Andi, direct use of geothermal energy can support various industrial sectors that require clean energy supplies. PGE also sees the development of green hydrogen as a new business opportunity amid national energy transition efforts.

In addition to expanding geothermal utilization, PGE is accelerating digital transformation through the development of well testing technology. This technology is aimed at increasing data accuracy, operational efficiency, and speeding up decision making.

"By strengthening innovation, cross-sector collaboration, and expanding geothermal utilization, PGE is optimistic that it can strengthen its position as a world-leading geothermal producer," said Andi.

Indonesia’s Geothermal Potential

PGE will also optimize geothermal assets that are already operating. PGE is also developing new sources of income through diversifying the use of geothermal energy outside the electricity generation business.

Indonesia has geothermal potential of around 24 gigawatts (GW), the second largest in the world. Andi expressed that this potential is capital to strengthen energy security while supporting the development of low-carbon industries.

As part of its long-term strategy, PGE targets its independently managed geothermal power generation capacity to reach 1 GW in 2028, with a long-term target of 1.8 GW by 2034.

"We will continue to optimize existing assets, encourage business expansion, while developing various sources of future income through innovation and diversification," said Andi.

Conclusion

PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy Tbk (PGE) is expanding the use of geothermal energy not only for power generation, but also for the industrial, agricultural, and green hydrogen development sectors as part of its business diversification strategy. The company is also accelerating digital transformation by developing well testing technology to improve data accuracy. With Indonesia's geothermal potential reaching approximately 24 GW, PGE assesses that this resource can support energy security and the development of low-carbon industries.
