Experts Urge Critical Thinking to Keep Pace with AI Adoption

5 hours ago | Artificial Intelligence

Jakarta, INTI -  Dr. Eng. Didik Dwi Prasetya, S.T., M.T., an Electrical Engineering expert at Universitas Negeri Malang (UM), said the rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) must be matched by stronger human critical-thinking skills. He emphasized that AI should serve as a learning partner rather than replace human reasoning.

“AI adoption must be balanced with critical thinking and guided by ethical principles, ensuring that technology becomes a learning partner rather than a substitute for human thinking,” he said.

AI Opens New Opportunities in Education

Didik noted that AI is increasingly supporting education, from learning and assessment to information processing, while also helping educators manage their workloads more efficiently.

He added that his team has also been using AI to assess student learning outcomes. Together with his colleagues, he has developed an AI model designed to help teachers evaluate student responses more consistently.

“My team and I are developing AI to support teachers in the assessment process. The system can provide detailed reasoning, analysis, and other insights,” he explained.

Despite its potential, Didik stressed the importance of understanding AI’s limitations and using it responsibly. He believes collaboration with AI can help produce stronger and more effective written work.

“AI can be used as a discussion partner, to explore ideas, provide feedback, and generate new perspectives. However, it should not take over the human role in the learning process,” he added.

Critical Thinking Remains Key in the AI Era

He also highlighted critical thinking as an essential human competency in an increasingly AI-driven environment. Simply knowing how to operate AI tools is not enough; users must be able to verify, question, and evaluate the information generated by AI.

Didik encouraged the public to use AI responsibly, noting that technological advancement cannot simply be restricted.

“Technology will continue to evolve, making the ability to adapt and understand the boundaries of technology increasingly important,” he said.

Ultimately, he emphasized that meaningful collaboration between humans and technology will be key to ensuring AI enhances rather than replaces the learning process, while helping create education that is more effective, relevant, and future-ready.

Conclusion

As AI continues to reshape education, human judgment and critical thinking remain essential. By combining AI capabilities with ethical use, critical evaluation, and human reasoning, educators and learners can harness the technology to make learning more effective without losing the value of human thought.
