Jakarta, INTI - Darmawan Prasodjo, President Director of PT PLN (Persero), stated that Indonesia is currently undertaking the world's largest solar power plant (PLTS) project.
"The largest ongoing solar project in the world right now is in the United Arab Emirates, with a capacity of 5.2 gigawatt-peak (GWp). Therefore, this initial 5.3 GWp phase already stands as the largest ongoing project globally," said Darmawan following the launch and groundbreaking ceremony for the 100 GWp Solar Power Program held in Gilimanuk, Bali, on Tuesday, August 25, 2026.
During the ceremony, the government also announced 14 PLTS projects with a combined capacity of 5.3 GWp. These 14 projects represent an investment value of approximately USD 7.7 billion (approximately Rp135 trillion) and offer potential state budget savings of Rp4.6 trillion annually.
"On Java Island, we will also see an addition of around 30 GWp of solar capacity from our combined initiatives, supplemented by a 100 gigawatt-hour (GWh) Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)," Darmawan said.
According to Darmawan, the BESS project is equivalent to 4–5 GW of load-following capacity, enabling it to replace Combined Cycle Gas Turbine power plants.
Load-following units, or dynamic buffers, serve to compensate for the intermittent nature (fluctuations) of electricity supply from PLTS.
14 Solar Power Projects Categorized into Several Groups
The government announced 14 solar power projects with a total capacity of 5.3 GWp, divided into several categories.
Six solar power projects are ready for tender, with a total capacity of 4,548.92 MWp:
- Jatiluhur Floating Solar Power Plant (PLTS Terapung), with a capacity of 1,688 MWp, located at the Jatiluhur Reservoir in Purwakarta, West Java
- PLTS Terapung Cirata, with a capacity of 1,250 MWp, located at Cirata Reservoir, Purwakarta, West Java
- PLTS Terapung Jatigede, with a capacity of 636 MWp, located at Jatigede Reservoir, Sumedang, West Java
- PLTS dan BESS Klaster Madura, with a capacity of 605 MWp, in Sumenep, East Java, to support the elimination of fuel oil usage program in Madura
- PLTS Bali, with a capacity of 300 MWp, in Gilimanuk, Jembrana, Bali, to eliminate fuel oil usage in Bali
- PLTS Lahan Bank Tanah Purwakarta, with a capacity of 69 MWp, in Purwakarta, West Java
Three solar power plant projects at the groundbreaking stage with a total capacity of 396.4 MWp:
- PLTS Banyuwangi (130.2 MWp capacity)
- PLTS Pasuruan (132 MWp capacity)
- PLTS Terapung Gajah Mungkur (134.2 MWp capacity)
Three solar power plant projects under construction with a total capacity of 271 MWp:
- PLTS Terapung Karangkates (133 MWp capacity; construction 56.54% complete)
- PLTS Terapung Saguling (92 MWp capacity; construction 44.4% complete)
- PLTS Tembesi (46 MWp capacity; construction 65% complete)
Two solar power plant projects entering the inauguration stage with a total capacity of 0.998 MWp:
- PLTS Pulau Sembur, Riau Islands (0.92 MWp capacity)
- PLTS Pulau Rengit, Bangka Belitung (0.078 MW capacity)
