4 hours ago | Green Industrial

Jakarta, INTI - Lippo Malls Indonesia (LMI) continues to expand its use of renewable energy by operating a rooftop solar power plant (PLTS) at Sun Plaza Medan, North Sumatra. With the operation of this facility, Sun Plaza becomes the fifth shopping center in the LMI network to utilize solar energy.

In 2026, LMI allocated an investment of approximately Rp11.6 billion for the construction of rooftop PLTS at Sun Plaza Medan and Lippo Plaza Kendari. This investment is part of the company's sustainability roadmap to increase the use of clean energy across its entire shopping center portfolio.

Previously, PLTS technology has been implemented at Lippo Mall Cikarang, Lippo Plaza Kramat Jati, Lippo Plaza Batu, and Lippo Plaza Kendari.

The rooftop PLTS at Sun Plaza is estimated to generate up to 810 MWh of renewable energy per year, or approximately 2.5 percent of the mall's total annual electricity needs. This system is also projected to save approximately Rp130 million annually in energy costs.

Up to 729 Tons of CO2 per Year can be Reduced

From an environmental perspective, the operation of the PLTS is estimated to reduce carbon emissions by 640–729 tons of CO2 per year. This figure is equivalent to the carbon absorption capacity of approximately 29,000–33,000 trees.

Chief Marketing Officer of Lippo Malls Indonesia, Santiwati Basuki, stated that the construction of PLTS at Sun Plaza and Lippo Plaza Kendari is part of the company's commitment to implementing environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles across all operational activities.

"For us, sustainability is not only a corporate responsibility, but also a strategic investment that can improve operational efficiency, strengthen asset competitiveness, and strengthen customer, business partner, and community trust in Lippo Malls Indonesia," said Santiwati.

In addition to Sun Plaza, LMI also completed the construction of a rooftop PLTS at Lippo Plaza Kendari in 2026 with an investment of approximately Rp5.2 billion. Both projects are part of the company's strategy to expand the use of clean energy within its operational environment.

Santiwati added that the implementation of solar power plants at Sun Plaza also supports the development of sustainable buildings in Medan.
