BRIN Offers Five Leading Applied Bioscience Innovations to Industry

2 months ago | Green Industrial

Jakarta, INTI - Badan Riset dan Inovasi Nasional (BRIN) is accelerating the downstream commercialization of national research by hosting the Applied Biosciences Business Matching 2026 at the B.J. Habibie Building in Jakarta on Thursday, February 26. The event brought researchers and industry partners together for direct engagement and collaboration.

During the forum, BRIN presented five flagship innovations: pheromone/bio-genol technology, livestock semen extender technology, fish feed formulations, essential oils and cosmetic formulations, and glutathione formulations derived from biomass waste for cosmetic applications. These technologies remain open for further joint development with industry partners to enhance market readiness and expand commercialization opportunities.

Addressing Regulatory and Licensing Challenges

Deputy for Research and Innovation Utilization at BRIN, R. Hendrian, stated that the government aims to build a more open and collaborative partnership model between research institutions and the business sector. He noted that in previous innovation dialogue sessions, BRIN’s leadership had directly gathered feedback from industry players, ranging from expectations and critiques to challenges in implementing licensing agreements.

“We recognize that the challenges faced by industry are not limited to technical product issues, but also involve regulatory hurdles. BRIN is committed to helping address obstacles related to certification processes at technical ministries and compliance with Domestic Component Level (TKDN) requirements. We will ensure that industries do not face difficulties in implementing research outcomes and bringing them to market,” Hendrian emphasized.

He further revealed that several companies have proposed continued development of licensed technologies, including greater flexibility in partnership schemes and licensing pricing. These inputs serve as key follow-up tasks for BRIN’s Directorate of Research and Innovation Utilization in Industry to ensure that downstream efforts do not stop at agreement signing, but continue through mentorship and support until commercialization is achieved.

“We are committed to supporting you through innovation contributions. If there are challenges or concerns, please communicate them to us. BRIN’s doors remain wide open to facilitate the advancement of national industries,” Hendrian added.

Strengthening Intellectual Property and Applied Research Capacity

Head of the Research Organization for Life Sciences and Environment (ORHL) at BRIN, Andes Hamuraby Rozak, described the event as an important milestone in aligning research outputs with real industry needs. He explained that ORHL not only conducts fundamental research in biodiversity exploration and discovery but also advances applied research through four research centers: applied botany, applied microbiology, applied zoology, and genetic engineering.

Over the past year, ORHL recorded approximately 1,200 international intellectual property rights (IPR) achievements and more than 600 registered IPR filings, ranging from patents to copyrights. These figures reflect the strong research productivity within the organization.

However, Andes stressed that intellectual property protection must be accompanied by refinement, market testing, and collaborative development to ensure that innovations are fully prepared for commercialization.

Conclusion

BRIN’s Applied Biosciences Business Matching 2026 highlights Indonesia’s commitment to transforming research excellence into industrial value. By strengthening partnerships, addressing regulatory barriers, and supporting continued development beyond licensing agreements, BRIN aims to ensure that national innovations not only remain protected as intellectual property but also reach the market and contribute to sustainable industrial growth.
