Jakarta, INTI - Amazon announced a massive investment plan to develop cloud infrastructure in the Southeast Asia region (ASEAN), worth more than US$33 billion. The project is scheduled to be built by 2039. According to Business Today, this strategic project will focus on four key countries, namely Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand, to strengthen the regional digital economy.

Amazon's Chief Global Affairs and Legal Officer, David Zapolsky, explained that this step aims to build infrastructure and train the local workforce to compete globally. He believes the current direction of government policies in ASEAN countries strongly supports the accelerated growth of the artificial intelligence (AI) and technology sectors.

"Amazon has plans to invest more than US$33 billion across Southeast Asia through 2039. We’re building infrastructure, training local workforces, and enabling businesses across the region to compete globally," he said.

Based on the company's economic impact assessment, the capital injection is projected to contribute more than US$64 billion to the collective Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand once all investment phases are complete.

Local Workforce Employment

This expansion is also expected to create 56,300 full-time jobs annually along the local data center supply chain.

"Governments across Southeast Asia deserve recognition for their bold leadership in shaping policies and economic conditions that are accelerating growth and attracting global investment in AI and technology at an unprecedented pace," David continued.

Southeast Asia itself is predicted to transform into the world's fourth-largest economy, with a digital economy worth US$560 billion by 2030.

With this large-scale cloud infrastructure investment, Amazon hopes to accelerate digital transformation and add significant value to the regional economy.
