Jakarta, INTI – In recent years, QRIS (Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard) has become the backbone of the national digital payment system. Whether we realize it or not, this technology is now present in the daily lives of Indonesians, from street snacks to business transactions in shopping centers.
Convenience, efficiency, and security are the main values that are felt directly by users. As stated by Rininta Oktaviana, a private employee in South Jakarta, QRIS is a mainstay payment tool in every daily transaction. “From buying Rp8,000 coffee carts to paying at the mall, all I have to do is scan using BRImo. Fast and safe,” she said.
Enggar, a private employee, also feels the benefits of QRIS in social activities such as donations at places of worship or helping street artists. “Even if I don't bring small money, I can still donate using QRIS,” she said.
QRIS Tap: New Innovations, New Challenges
Not stopping at traditional QR scanning, a new innovation called QRIS Tap is now being introduced. This NFC (Near Field Communication) based technology allows payments to be made by simply attaching the phone to the EDC device, without the need to open the camera. Although its adoption is still limited, both Enggar and Rininta hope that its implementation can be widespread soon to make transactions more practical.
Positive Impact for Businesses
For business people, QRIS is also a game changer. Putri, the owner of a restaurant in Mampang Prapatan, South Jakarta, noted an increase in revenue of up to 70% since adopting BRI QRIS. “Most of my customers are employees, rarely carry cash. Now there are more transactions through QRIS. It's faster and safer,” she explained.
Although there is a waiting time for the disbursement of funds, Putri considers this system still profitable because the cash flow of her business is more organized and free from the risk of counterfeit money.
Digital Competitiveness and Global Challenges
Amidst this success, QRIS was highlighted in the US Government's 2025 National Trade Estimate (NTE) annual report. Concerns were raised about potential restrictions or adjustments as it was considered to have an impact on global services such as Visa and Mastercard. However, according to Economics, Tauhid Ahmad, this reflects the independence of Indonesia's payment system.
“The majority of public transactions only occur domestically. QRIS is more relevant, cheaper, and inclusive than global fees that reach 2-3% per transaction,” he said. According to him, when digital penetration has passed 60% of the population, QRIS has significant room for growth, especially in the MSME sector and non-urban areas.
BRI: Encouraging Literacy & Inclusion Through QRIS
PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI) is one of the institutions that most actively encourages the implementation of QRIS. Dept Head Funding & Transaction Ecosystem Sales 2 BRI, Fransisca, said that QRIS not only makes it easier for customers, but also increases the operational efficiency of merchants. “Active merchants who use QRIS BRI have a great opportunity to get business development support from us,” she said.
In 2024, BRI's QRIS transaction volume in Regional Jakarta 2 reached Rp 2.8 trillion. In addition to education and promos such as cashback at merchants, BRI is also developing QRIS Tap integration in the BRImo application so that customers can transact faster and seamlessly.
Conclusion
QRIS is not just a digital payment method, it has become a symbol of Indonesia's financial inclusion and digital transformation. From street food to MSMEs, this technology drives efficiency, transparency, and more equitable economic growth. In the midst of global challenges, QRIS strengthens Indonesia's position as a country with a modern and sovereign payment system.
