Jakarta, INTI - In the era of a rapidly evolving digital economy, Indonesia is on an important path to ensure its national payment system is independent, inclusive and efficient. One of the main pillars in this transformation is QRIS (Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard), an innovation that not only facilitates transactions, but also strengthens the position of small and medium enterprises (UMKM) in the midst of global competition.
QRIS: A Symbol of Digital Independence and Inclusion
As part of the national digital payment ecosystem, QRIS has proven to have a significant impact, especially for SMEs players. With this technology, the payment process becomes faster, more transparent and affordable, both for consumers and businesses.
This was emphasized by Eddy Soeparno, Deputy Chairman of the MPR RI from the PAN faction. In his official statement on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, he highlighted that QRIS is a strategic step in maintaining the sovereignty of the national digital economy.
“QRIS is part of our big effort in building an inclusive national digital ecosystem. This technology has been proven to help SMEs players, expand access to non-cash transactions, and create efficiency in various sectors,” said Eddy.
Responding to the pressure and spotlight from outside parties, Eddy emphasized that Indonesia has the right to develop a payment system that is in accordance with national interests. He said that the implementation of QRIS is not a form of protectionism, but an effort to build a fair and equal system.
“We are not restricting outsiders, but we also cannot simply allow the dominance of foreign systems without clear regulations. This is about maintaining national economic independence.”
QRIS Open to Healthy Competition
Interestingly, QRIS is not exclusive. This system is designed to continue to be open to international collaboration as long as it upholds the principles of transparency and fair competition.
“If there are foreign companies that want to enter and participate in our national payment system, please go ahead. As long as they follow the applicable rules and are willing to compete fairly with local players,” Eddy added.
Focus on SMEs and Financial Inclusion Acceleration
As a member of Commission XII of the House of Representatives in charge of finance and banking, Eddy also reminded the public not to be easily affected by external pressures. He invited all parties to stay focused on the most important things: empowering UMKM and accelerating financial inclusion.
“We should not waver just because there is pressure or objections from outside. Our focus is on empowering the people,SMEs and accelerating national financial inclusion. That is our top priority,” he concluded.
Conclusion
QRIS is not only a payment technology solution, but also a reflection of Indonesia's commitment to maintaining economic sovereignty and promoting financial inclusion. With an open yet principled system, QRIS presents a healthy collaboration space between local and global players. In the midst of international pressures and dynamics, we need to stay focused on the main mission: empowering the UMKM, strengthening the national system, and building a sovereign and just digital future for Indonesia.
