Jakarta, INTI - Microsoft reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the safe, regulatory-compliant, and impactful adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) in Indonesia at the Microsoft AI Summit Indonesia 2026 in Jakarta.
The company assessed that trust, security, and regulatory compliance are key foundations for accelerating digital transformation, especially in highly regulated sectors like financial services and higher education.
President Director of Microsoft Indonesia, Dharma Simorangkir, stated that Microsoft's cloud and AI technology is designed to meet domestic data storage needs while helping organizations comply with Indonesian regulations.
In the same event, the Deputy Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the Financial Services Authority (OJK), Hernawan Bekti Sasongko, emphasized the importance of collaboration between regulators, industry, and technology providers to ensure responsible AI utilization. He added that digital solutions have the potential to increase efficiency, strengthen oversight, promote inclusion, and provide relevant and trusted financial services to the public.
Implementation in the Field
Microsoft also revealed that it has updated the OJK's list of regulations and requirements to help financial services institutions navigate the compliance process during digital transformation. One example of this implementation is BNI Finance, which migrated its core systems to Microsoft Azure through the Indonesia Central cloud region without disrupting business operations.
In the higher education sector, the Open University (Universitas Terbuka) is utilizing Microsoft Azure, Azure OpenAI Service, and Microsoft Foundry to develop AI Tutor, which is now used in around 500 classes and by over 100,000 students. This technology is claimed to increase participation in online discussions and accelerate assignment grading.
Microsoft believes Indonesia has significant potential to become a global hub for AI development thanks to its market scale, talent pool, and accelerating digital transformation. To support this, Microsoft is preparing a long-term investment of US$1.7 billion through 2028 to build a safe, inclusive, and sustainable AI ecosystem.
