Span Collabs with Nvidia to Make XFRA Nodes Mini Data Center that Uses Smart Electrical Panels

1 day ago | Data Center

Jakarta, INTI - Nvidia and Span are designing a home-based data center using smart electrical panels. These data centers are called XFRA Nodes and can be coordinated to collectively serve data center workloads over an internet connection.

Span CEO Arch Rao revealed that this technology consists of a tiny compute box powered by a liquid-cooled Nvidia RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Server Edition GPU, running silently. Instead of building a centralized 100-megawatt facility, which would take years and billions of dollars, Span claims it can deploy 8,000 XFRA units at six times the speed and one-fifth the cost.

It is reported that to maintain computing workload stability, backup batteries will be installed alongside the XFRA nodes. This component serves as a buffer during short-term demand spikes and maintains operations during disruptions to the main power grid.

Initial Tests Have Been Done

Span has conducted internal testing of a prototype of this system with paying customers. The company now plans a proof-of-concept in the third quarter of 2026 by deploying 100 nodes in new construction homes.

Span CRO Ryan Harris explained that the pilot program will take place in the southwestern United States, likely in Nevada or Arizona. Starting in 2027, the company aims to scale its annual capacity beyond 1 gigawatt (GW).

Interestingly, the mini data center will not add any new electricity load. XFRA is designed to utilize idle electrical capacity on the local grid. Span is currently working with PulteGroup, one of the largest real estate developers in the United States, to test the economics of these units in a new housing community.

Conclusion

Nvidia and Span developed mini data centers that can be installed in homes. The mini data center is powered with Nvidia RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Server Edition GPU. Span stated that internal tests have been done with paying customers and plans to deploy 100 nodes in Q3 2026. Span said that the smart panel and battery backup will not cost the homeowner or business hosting them anything.
