Indonesia Excels in GenAI Mastery, Grows 237% in a Year

3 weeks ago | Artificial Intelligence

Jakarta, INTI – On June 12, 2025 Indonesia showed a big leap in the development of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) skills. According to the annual Global Skills Report 2025 released by online learning platform Coursera, the number of GenAI course registrants in Indonesia has increased by 237% in the past year. This figure far exceeds the average growth in the Asia Pacific region which is only 132%, and even exceeds the global average of 195%.

This finding confirms Indonesia's increasingly serious position in encouraging mastery of artificial intelligence technology, while accelerating digital transformation in the education and workforce sectors.

Indonesia's Global and Regional Rankings in Skills Mastery

In a report compiled from more than 170 million Coursera users worldwide, Indonesia ranked 47th globally in overall skills mastery. At the Asia Pacific level, Indonesia ranked 12th.

When viewed by skill area, the competence of Indonesian learners is recorded at 41% in business, 58% in technology, and 60% in data science. Meanwhile, in the AI Maturity Index, a new indicator that measures a country's readiness in the artificial intelligence ecosystem, Indonesia is ranked 43rd in the world.

Support for National Strategy and Future Education

This achievement cannot be separated from the encouragement of various national initiatives, such as the National Strategy for Indonesia's Artificial Intelligence 2045 and the Merdeka Belajar-Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) policy. These programs emphasize the importance of technology integration in the education system, as well as strengthening digital-based work competencies.

The World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs 2025 report also shows that 83% of companies in Indonesia predict major transformations in their work processes by 2030, well above the global average of 60%.

Today's Skills Trends in High Demand

Data from Coursera also shows that the types of skills that Indonesians are learning today are closely related to industry needs. Courses such as Customer Service increased 53%, Curiosity increased 51%, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning grew 48%, and Creative Thinking increased 40%.

This trend reflects that in addition to technical ability, the world of work also requires soft skills and a way of thinking that is adaptive to change.

Coursera: Indonesia is Seriously Preparing AI-Literate Human Resources

Head of Asia Pacific Coursera, Eklavya Bhave, stated that this positive development shows that Indonesians are preparing themselves for a new digital-based work era.

“AI is now a top priority in the world of work, and learners in Indonesia are responding by equipping themselves through GenAI courses to stay relevant and competitive,” she said.

He also added that national and educational strategies that support the mastery of future skills are a strong foundation for building superior human resources. “Coursera is proud to be a partner in this transformation, together with the education sector, industry, and government,” he concluded.

Conclusion

Indonesia is proving itself to be one of the most adaptive countries in facing the wave of the global AI revolution. With significant growth in interest in learning GenAI, national policy support, and industry awareness of the importance of digital skills, Indonesia is poised to produce a generation of digital talent capable of competing on the world stage.
