YouTube is Expanding In-App Direct Messaging Feature to the US

5 hours ago | Digital Technology

Jakarta, INTI - YouTube announced the expansion of its direct messaging feature for mobile to the United States. Engadget reported that the Google-owned video-sharing platform began testing the direct messaging feature in Ireland and Poland in late 2025.

Then, in March 2026, the feature was tested in more European countries. Now, its third expansion is underway in the US, and the feature is available to users aged 18 and over.

Previously in 2017, YouTube also introduced a similar direct message feature. However, the platform removed it in 2019 to encourage public conversations in the video comments section.

The Feature is a Popular Request

In announcing the relaunch of the feature in the US, YouTube stated that it was one of its most popular feature requests. This launch is based on the positive feedback received from countries where the feature has been active for the past few months.

While many instant messaging apps are already available to internet users, this in-app feature can make it easier for users to share content without having to switch apps. YouTube still allows users to share content with other apps.

Conclusion

YouTube is expanding its direct messaging feature in its mobile app to users aged 18 and older in the United States. This feature allows users to send chat invitations and share videos directly within the YouTube app. This DM feature is YouTube's second attempt after a similar service launched in 2017 was discontinued in 2019.
