BINUS @Malang Launches AI Program to Prepare Students for the Future of Technology

Jakarta, INTI - BINUS University is strengthening its efforts to develop competitive digital talent amid the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI). The initiative was marked by the launch of the Artificial Intelligence Program at BINUS @Malang on Monday, September 14, 2026.

Held at the BINUS @Malang campus, the program reflects the university’s “AI Empowers @ BINUS” initiative. It aims to encourage students to move beyond simply using AI technology and develop the ability to understand, create, and apply AI strategically, ethically, and responsibly.

BINUS University Rector Dr. Nelly, S.Kom., M.M., said AI expertise should be directed toward creating innovations that deliver tangible benefits for society and Indonesia.

“The expansion of the Artificial Intelligence Program reflects BINUS University’s commitment to providing broader opportunities for Indonesia’s younger generation to master the technologies of the future. We want them not only to become technology users, but also innovators capable of developing solutions and creating positive impacts for society,” said Dr. Nelly.

At BINUS @Malang, the program also reinforces the campus’s position as a Digital Technopreneur Campus. The concept combines digital technology expertise with students’ ability to identify opportunities, develop solutions, and create innovations that generate value for society and industry.

Students are encouraged not only to understand technology but also to transform their ideas into digital products, services, and businesses. The Artificial Intelligence Program is expected to create greater opportunities for young people in Malang and Eastern Indonesia to contribute to the growth of the digital economy.

Dr. Robertus Tang Herman, S.E., M.M., Director of BINUS @Malang, emphasized that AI proficiency must be accompanied by the ability to develop relevant and practical solutions.

“For us, mastering AI cannot stop at the ability to use the technology. Students need to be encouraged to develop relevant solutions, build innovations, and create tangible impacts for society,” he said.

According to Robertus, the Artificial Intelligence Program at BINUS @Malang is part of the university’s efforts to provide more opportunities for young people to grow as digital technopreneurs who can contribute to Malang, Eastern Indonesia, and the country as a whole.

“Through the Artificial Intelligence Program at BINUS @Malang, we want to create broader opportunities for young people to become digital technopreneurs who can contribute to Malang, Eastern Indonesia, and Indonesia,” Robertus added.

Malang, as an education hub and one of the emerging centers for creative and digital economic growth, is considered to have significant potential for technology-driven innovation. This environment provides students with opportunities to develop solutions that address real needs across society and industry.

Multidisciplinary AI Curriculum

From an academic perspective, BINUS University’s Artificial Intelligence Program features a multidisciplinary curriculum. The program covers mathematical foundations, data science, machine learning, computer vision, natural language processing, the Internet of Things (IoT), and robotics.

Meanwhile, Prof. Dr. Ir. Derwin Suhartono, S.Kom., M.T.I., Dean of the School of Computer Science at BINUS University, said the challenge for today’s younger generation is not simply understanding AI but developing the competencies required to work alongside the technology.

“The key question today is no longer whether AI will replace humans, but whether the younger generation has the competencies to work alongside AI,” said Prof. Derwin.

He emphasized that students need strong academic foundations to evaluate AI outputs, develop solutions, and apply the technology strategically, ethically, and responsibly.

AI proficiency also cannot be separated from an understanding of real-world challenges. For this reason, project-based learning forms an important part of the program, enabling students to view technology not merely as a tool but as a means of developing relevant and sustainable solutions.

This approach aligns with the role of a digital technopreneur, who is expected not only to create innovations but also to understand how solutions are developed, implemented, and transformed into value for users.
