Batam’s Data Center Industry Requires Significant Power Supply

6 hours ago | Data Center

Jakarta, INTI - Batam is increasingly emerging as a strategic location for data center development in Southeast Asia. The Batam Indonesia Free Zone Authority (BP Batam) has recorded at least nine major data center investment commitments planned for the Nongsa Digital Park area.

The growing interest from investors is creating significant infrastructure requirements, particularly in electricity supply.

Rising Power Demand Challenges Batam’s Data Center Growth

According to BP Batam, the power demand needed to support the nine data center projects is projected to increase from around 800 megawatts (MW) to 3,000 MW. This significant increase makes power system readiness a critical factor that needs to be strengthened. Without adequate and reliable electricity supply, Batam’s potential to become a major data center hub in Southeast Asia could be constrained.

Ida Fauziyah, a member of Commission VI of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), said the government needs to ensure that three key aspects develop simultaneously: certainty of power supply, regulatory certainty, and financing synergy.

Ida made the statement during a specific working visit to BP Batam on Friday, September 4, 2026.

According to Ida, data center development is not solely about investment and economic growth. Digital infrastructure also has a strategic dimension because it involves the management and protection of national data.

“Strengthening data centers is essentially about strengthening national sovereignty. Three pillars must move together: state-owned enterprises such as Telkom, PLN, and state-owned construction companies as operators; BPI Danantara as the anchor investor; and regulations requiring strategic national data to be managed domestically,” Ida emphasized.

The projected electricity demand of up to 3,000 MW highlights the scale of the data center industry being developed in Batam. Meeting this demand will require not only additional generation capacity, but also adequate transmission and distribution networks to ensure a stable power supply.

Infrastructure and Energy Reliability Key to Investment

For data center operators, electricity reliability is a fundamental requirement. Power disruptions can directly affect facilities that operate 24 hours a day. Therefore, certainty and continuity of energy supply are among the key considerations for investors when selecting locations for their facilities.

The government must also ensure that energy infrastructure development keeps pace with the acceleration of data center investment. Otherwise, the large investment commitments already secured may not all be realized according to plan.

With nine investment commitments already recorded, Batam has a significant opportunity to strengthen its position as a regional data center hub. However, this momentum needs to be supported by adequate electricity infrastructure, clear regulations, and financing mechanisms capable of meeting the industry’s long-term requirements.

If these three aspects can progress together, the wave of data center investment could not only strengthen Batam’s economy but also create an opportunity for Indonesia to develop a stronger and more competitive data center ecosystem in Southeast Asia.

Conclusion

Batam is emerging as a promising data center hub in Southeast Asia, supported by nine major investment commitments and growing demand for digital infrastructure. However, realizing this potential will depend on reliable power supply, adequate energy infrastructure, clear regulations, and sustainable financing. With these key elements developing in parallel, Batam can strengthen its position as a regional data center hub while contributing to a more competitive and resilient data center ecosystem in Indonesia.
