Technology Transfer Must Be a Key Component of AI Investment in Indonesia, Says Nezar Patria

Jakarta, INTI - The Indonesian government has emphasized that partnerships with global technology companies must go beyond capital investment and generate tangible outcomes, including technology transfer, workforce upskilling, and the strengthening of the country's innovation ecosystem.

Indonesia's Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, Nezar Patria, stated that the development of artificial intelligence (AI) in Indonesia should contribute directly to national development through technology transfer and enhanced human resource capabilities.

According to Nezar, collaboration between local talent and global expertise is a crucial foundation for accelerating digital transformation while supporting Indonesia’s vision of becoming a developed nation by 2045.

“Collaboration is essential for three key reasons: building technology transfer infrastructure, strengthening capacity development, and ensuring sustainable progress,” Nezar said during the AI Center of Excellence: Accelerate AI for Good event in Central Jakarta on June 9, 2026.

AI Positioned as a New Engine of Economic Growth

Nezar noted that Indonesia has set ambitious goals to achieve 8 percent economic growth and attain developed-country status by 2045.

To reach these objectives, he said the country must leverage digital transformation, advanced technological infrastructure, and artificial intelligence as new drivers of economic growth.

He highlighted Indonesia’s strong potential to play a significant role in the global AI economy, supported by its demographic dividend, rapidly expanding digital economy, and long-term commitment to sustainable development.

“With a strong demographic dividend, a dynamic and growing digital economy, and a steadfast commitment to long-term development, we are not merely a market, we are a hub for innovation, talent, and strategic investment,” he stated.

AI Development Must Remain Human-Centered

Nezar further stressed that AI development should be guided by human interests and deliver broad societal benefits.

This principle serves as the foundation of Indonesia’s national AI strategy, including the establishment of the AI Center of Excellence through strategic cooperation between the government and industry partners. The initiative aims to strengthen the country’s AI competitiveness, enhance digital sovereignty, and expand access to AI technologies across multiple sectors.

“AI should be a catalyst for progress, a partner in development, and a tool that uplifts every layer of society. That is the true essence of AI for good,” he said.

Global Partnerships to Strengthen Indonesia’s AI Ecosystem

According to Nezar, Indonesia’s long-term ambitions cannot be achieved through domestic efforts alone.

As a result, partnerships with global technology leaders such as Nokia and NVIDIA are considered vital in connecting world-class innovation with Indonesia’s growing pool of digital talent.

He explained that such collaborations would enable Indonesia not only to adopt advanced technologies but also to adapt and improve them, creating new sources of economic value aligned with national development priorities.

“When global expertise meets Indonesian ingenuity, we do more than adopt technology, we adapt it, innovate on top of it, and create new sources of economic value,” he said.

Nezar also encouraged all stakeholders to seize the momentum of Indonesia’s AI development to build an ecosystem that is inclusive, secure, and transformative.

He expressed hope that collaboration among government institutions, industry players, academia, and international partners would strengthen national capabilities and ensure that AI delivers meaningful benefits to society while supporting the realization of Indonesia Emas 2045.

Conclusion

Indonesia is positioning AI as a strategic driver of economic growth and digital transformation. The government emphasizes that AI investments must go beyond funding by delivering technology transfer, talent development, and innovation capabilities that strengthen national competitiveness and support the vision of Indonesia Emas 2045.
