Jakarta, INTI - On Thursday, March 12, 2026, Nissan Motor, Uber Technologies, and Wayve said that they will collaborate to develop robotaxis. They plan to unveil a pilot program in Tokyo by late 2026.

This collaboration is Uber's first vehicle partnership in Japan. In a statement, the companies said that Nissan's electric vehicle, Nissan Leaf, will be equipped with self-driving vehicle systems from Wayve, a British autonomous driving technology company.

After development, the Nissan vehicles with Wayve systems will operate on the Uber platform in the initial phase, operated by trained safety drivers. The robotaxi service will be launched through a licensed taxi partner in Japan.

The Three Companies Had Prior Projects and Partnership

Previously, Wayve first partnered with Uber in August 2024. Both companies aim to launch services in more than 10 cities worldwide.

In September 2025, Nissan also said that the company had begun tests on driver-assistance systems using Wayve’s technology, ahead ‌of a planned launch in Japan in the financial year 2027.

"We have been testing our technology throughout Japan since early 2025," said Alex Kendall, Wayve CEO. He also added that the partnership will allow the company to introduce its technology responsibly.
