Jakarta, INTI - PT PLN Energi Primer Indonesia (PLN EPI) continues to accelerate the use of biomass co-firing in its Steam Power Plants (PLTU). This step is part of the company's efforts to support the energy transition while reducing carbon emissions from the national electricity sector.
PLN EPI's Director of Biomass, Hokkop Situngkir, revealed that throughout 2025, the company had supplied approximately 2.35 million tons of biomass. This supply contributed to a reduction in emissions of approximately 2.72 million tons of CO2e.
"This figure is targeted to increase to 3.65 million tons in 2026 and 4.07 million tons in 2027 to support the implementation of co-firing at 52 PLTUs across Indonesia," he said on Monday, July 27, 2026.
Cumulatively, during the 2023–2026 period, PLN EPI has supplied 4.77 million tons of biomass. This supply is dominated by wood-based biomass, particularly sawdust, accounting for 54.6%, and woodchips, accounting for 22.4%. Both types of biomass are considered to meet the fuel specifications required for power plants.
Hokkop explained that increasing biomass utilization depends not only on raw material availability but also requires strengthening the overall ecosystem to ensure optimal supply chain operation.
Challenges in Bioenergy Development
He explained that current challenges in bioenergy development include processing capacity, meeting quality standards, storage systems, and efficient distribution and logistics to power plants.
To address these challenges, PLN EPI is implementing an integrated processing scheme through the Spoke-Hub concept. This model connects raw material collection facilities with processing and distribution centers, expected to improve biomass supply chain efficiency.
Furthermore, the company is strengthening its raw material trading system through a digital technology-based Biomass Marketplace. This platform is designed to maintain daily supply continuity while ensuring the quality of biomass delivered to each PLTU remains up to standard.
As part of strengthening the national supply chain infrastructure, PLN EPI has operated biomass processing facilities in Tasikmalaya and Ciamis. Each facility has a production capacity of up to 10 tons per hour to support PLTU biomass supply needs.
Going forward, PLN EPI will expand its network of biomass processing centers by establishing new hubs in several strategic areas, including Lebak, Lamongan, Blora, Cilegon, and Suralaya region.
"By 2028, PLN EPI is targeting the development of 15 Main Hubs/Biomass Hubs across Indonesia through company investment and collaboration with strategic partners. This infrastructure is expected to ensure the quality and continuity of supply, while also improving the efficiency of biomass logistics for power plants throughout Indonesia," he concluded.
