BRIN and Universitas Mataram Strengthen Clean Energy Research for the 1 MW per Village Program

4 hours ago | Green Industrial

Jakarta, INTI - The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) is strengthening its research collaboration with Universitas Mataram (Unram) to develop new and renewable energy (NRE) systems for coastal areas.

This collaboration, carried out through the Intelligent Power and Energy Systems (InPES) research group from the Research Organization for Energy and Manufacturing (OREM), serves as the basis for research in Ekas Buana Village, East Lombok Regency, as the development site for the 1 MW per Village Program model based on solar power plants (PLTS).

Energy Independence in Villages

The program is designed to support village energy independence through the use of clean energy that can support productive economic activities in the community. The collaboration began with the signing of a Cooperation Agreement, institutional coordination, and a focus group discussion (FGD) held in Lombok from June 29–July 2, 2026.

Moch Arief Albachrony, a researcher engineer at BRIN, stated that the collaboration with Unram is part of BRIN's strategy to strengthen collaboration between research institutions, universities, local governments, and the business community to produce innovations that can be applied to meet regional needs.

"Technology development cannot be done alone. Therefore, we build collaboration from the planning stage, conceptualization, to field implementation so that the resulting solutions are tailored to regional needs," said Arief as stated on BRIN’s website.

According to Arief, the research is supported by the Purnomo Yusgiantoro Center (PYC) through the RECLICKS program, funded by FINSCAPE, University of Waterloo, Canada. This program supports the development of community-based climate financing strategies through off-grid photovoltaic systems that integrate energy and clean water provision for coastal communities.

The Head of BRIN's Research Center for Electrical Technology (PRTK), Eka Rakhman Priandana, stated that the energy transition needs to start in villages through the development of energy systems that not only generate electricity but also support community economic growth.

"The 1 MW per Village PLTS Program with a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is one approach to building village energy independence while supporting the Net Zero Emission target. However, its implementation needs to be tailored to the electricity grid conditions, regional characteristics, and local economic potential to ensure sustainable benefits," Eka explained.

Conclusion

BRIN and Universitas Mataram are strengthening research collaboration to develop a new renewable energy system based on solar power plants (PLTS) in coastal areas through the 1 MW per Village Program in Ekas Buana Village, East Lombok. This research aims to build village energy independence while supporting community economic activities.
