Jakarta, INTI - The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) welcomed delegations from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT) of Japan to the Samaun Samadikun Science and Technology Park (KST) in Bandung on Monday, May 4.
The Chairman of the Research Organization for Electronics and Informatics (OREI) of BRIN, Budi Prawara, stated that the visit opened up opportunities for collaboration between BRIN and MEXT.
"BRIN has several collaboration schemes, including research mobility, such as visiting researchers, degree-by-research programs, and postdoctoral fellowships. We also offer various research funding opportunities that we could potentially leverage together with Japan," he said.
The Japanese delegation was led by Fuchigami Takashi, Director General of the Research Promotion Bureau of MEXT Japan. During the meeting, BRIN and MEXT discussed opportunities for global collaboration, particularly within the framework of the Advancing Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Science strategy, a priority program of the Japanese government.
"Japan is currently focusing heavily on the AI for Science initiative. We recognize that the existence of AI agents that can operate autonomously will significantly change the paradigm of future research. Experiments and research that previously took years can now be significantly accelerated," Fuchigami said.
The Head of Research Center for Artificial Intelligence and Cyber Security (PRKAKS) of BRIN, Anto Satriyo Nugroho, presented various research achievements and discussed the latest technology trends, such as Agentic AI and Quantum Machine Learning.
"Agentic AI is a type of artificial intelligence that not only answers questions but is also able to act independently as an agent to achieve specific goals. This technology is a crucial development because AI no longer simply produces responses but can make decisions and carry out tasks autonomously," Anto said.
Japan Focuses on AI-Based Science
Japan's focus is now shifting from industry and manufacturing to strengthening AI-based science. This shift can open opportunities for Indonesian researchers to expand collaboration and research development.
MEXT’s visit to Indonesia is part of Japanese science diplomatic tours to introduce the Advancing AI for Science Strategy to several ASEAN countries, South Korea, and the United States. It is hoped that the visit can lead to positive collaboration between the two countries to strengthen AI development.
Conclusion
MEXT Japan visited BRIN to discuss opportunities for collaborative research and development in AI. The meeting focused on Japan's Advancing AI for Science strategy, a priority for Japan in utilizing AI to accelerate scientific research. Both parties believe that autonomous AI agents will shift the research paradigm and open up opportunities for broader collaboration between Indonesia and Japan in the fields of science and technology.
