UNAND Proposes Tunnel Research Center to Support Strategic Infrastructure Development in West Sumatra

5 hours ago | Industrial Transformation

Jakarta, INTI - Andalas University (UNAND) has proposed the establishment of a research center focused on tunnel studies and complex underground structures to support the development of strategic infrastructure projects in West Sumatra.

UNAND Rector Efa Yonnedi stated that the research center will collaborate with Hutama Karya, Indonesia’s Ministry of Public Works, and the West Sumatra Provincial Government.

Before initiating the proposal, Efa Yonnedi met with several strategic stakeholders, including the Chief Operating Officer of Danantara and the Head of the State-Owned Enterprises Regulatory Agency. The discussions aimed to strengthen UNAND’s involvement in preparing the regional development master plan for West Sumatra.

The idea of establishing the research center emerged from the growing opportunity for universities to contribute directly to strategic infrastructure development across the region, particularly in toll road and tunnel construction projects in West Sumatra.

“This is a major opportunity for the Faculty of Engineering. We can establish a tunnel and complex structure research center that not only supports infrastructure development, but also generates research output, publications, internship opportunities, and advanced research-based study programs,” said Efa Yonnedi.

Supporting Toll Road and Elevated Road Projects in West Sumatra

Several national strategic projects are currently underway or planned in West Sumatra. One of the most significant is the continuation of the Padang–Pekanbaru Toll Road project, particularly the Sicincin–Bukittinggi section that will eventually connect to Pekanbaru in Riau Province.

In addition, the Ministry of Public Works, through Hutama Karya, is also developing the Sitinjau Lauik Flyover project. The elevated road project is reportedly valued at approximately Rp2.793 trillion and is being implemented through a public-private partnership (PPP/KPBU) scheme.

Strengthening Collaboration Between Academia and Industry

The collaboration between universities and industry is expected to create mutual benefits in research development and human resource advancement. The partnership also opens opportunities for industry practitioners to pursue master’s and doctoral degrees through research-based programs at UNAND.

According to Efa Yonnedi, many alumni from UNAND’s Faculty of Engineering have reached prominent positions at the national level. He noted that graduates are not only serving in middle-management roles, but also acting as strategic decision-makers across key sectors.

“Faculty of Engineering alumni have become CEOs and leaders influencing the energy, finance, infrastructure, and many other strategic sectors in Indonesia,” he concluded.

Conclusion

The establishment of a tunnel and underground structure research center by Andalas University highlights the growing role of universities in supporting Indonesia’s strategic infrastructure development. Through collaboration with government and industry partners, the initiative is expected to strengthen research innovation, talent development, and the successful implementation of major infrastructure projects in West Sumatra.
