Toyota Indonesia Partners with CATL to Develop Electric Vehicle Batteries

6 hours ago | Green Industrial

Jakarta, INTI - PT Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (TMMIN) has announced a strategic partnership with Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL) to develop batteries for electrified vehicles.

TMMIN President Director, Nandi Julyanto, stated that the collaboration represents a significant step in strengthening the foundation of Indonesia’s national automotive manufacturing ecosystem, particularly in the electrification segment.

“As Toyota’s first subsidiary in ASEAN to export batteries to the global market under this partnership, TMMIN is investing trillions of rupiah in this initiative,” Nandi said in Tangerang on Monday, April 20, 2026.

He revealed that the company has allocated approximately IDR 1.3 trillion to support the development of locally produced batteries. Nandi expressed hope that this effort will reinforce the domestic supply chain ecosystem for advanced automotive components.

“We believe localization is a gradual process that cannot be achieved instantly, but requires time and strong collaboration among all stakeholders,” he added.

He further emphasized that the partnership is expected to bring positive impacts to Indonesia, including strengthening the national supply chain competitiveness, encouraging downstream industrial development, supporting economic growth, increasing local content value, and enhancing energy resilience.

Toyota Indonesia is one of the country’s largest automotive manufacturers. According to Nandi, the company has produced over 10 million vehicles, with around 3 million units exported to more than 100 countries worldwide.

“This contribution has helped strengthen the national industry through investments exceeding IDR 100 trillion, the creation of up to 360,000 jobs, an 80% local content level, and various other contributions,” he noted.

CATL Facility in Karawang Ready for Mass Production

Meanwhile, CATL Executive President of the Japan Business Group, Ni Zheng, welcomed the strategic collaboration. He explained that Toyota Indonesia has invested in battery cell and module production lines at CATL’s Indonesian facility.

“This joint project is now fully ready for mass production. I would like to express sincere appreciation to both the Indonesian and Chinese governments for their strong support,” Zheng said.

He added that Toyota has worked closely with CATL to realize the project, marking a significant milestone in localizing new energy solutions for Toyota vehicles in Indonesia.

“The battery production line at CATL’s Karawang facility has completed equipment installation, commissioning, and testing, fully meeting Toyota’s global quality standards and is officially ready for mass production,” he explained.

CATL previously gained attention during the groundbreaking ceremony of a major government-backed project in Karawang, West Java, in mid-2025. The facility is expected to begin operations in the second half of this year.

Conclusion

The partnership between TMMIN and CATL marks a pivotal milestone in accelerating Indonesia’s electric vehicle ecosystem. With significant investment, strong government support, and readiness for mass production, the collaboration not only strengthens the domestic supply chain but also positions Indonesia as a key player in the global EV battery industry.
