TikTok Shuts Down 780,000 Child Accounts Amid Government Pressure on Other Platforms

2 days ago | Digital Technology

Jakarta, INTI - Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Meutya Hafid stated that efforts to protect children in the digital space are beginning to show tangible results.

As of April 10, 2026, TikTok has deactivated approximately 780,000 accounts belonging to users under the age of 16 in Indonesia.

This move is part of the implementation of Government Regulation No. 17 of 2025 on the Governance of Electronic System Operations for Child Protection (PP TUNAS).

“We note that TikTok is the first platform to report that, as of April 10, 2026, it has deactivated 780,000 accounts of users under 16 in Indonesia,” Meutya said during a press conference at the Ministry’s office in Central Jakarta on Tuesday, April 14, 2026.

She expressed appreciation to TikTok for joining the collective effort to protect children, particularly in Indonesia.

“TikTok has submitted a letter of compliance commitment to the Government of the Republic of Indonesia, published a minimum age requirement of 16 through its Help Center, and committed to regularly updating its implementation,” she explained.

Meutya emphasized that this marks a highly positive first step and represents a significant win for the public, especially for parents and children in Indonesia.

“We also expect other platforms to soon report the number of accounts they have taken action against or removed,” she added.

Government Urges Broader Compliance Across Platforms

Meanwhile, regarding Roblox, the ministry noted developments at the global level.

Roblox has reportedly made adjustments to its settings and introduced new features globally from its headquarters in the United States as part of its child protection efforts.

However, the government considers these measures insufficient to fully comply with PP TUNAS regulations in Indonesia.

“There are still loopholes that allow communication or chat with strangers,” she said.

The ministry stressed that Roblox cannot yet be categorized as a platform compliant with PP TUNAS.

“With regret, despite the many adjustments made, we are not yet able to accept Roblox’s proposal to declare compliance with PP TUNAS,” she stated.

Previously, platforms such as X, Bigo Live, and Meta (including Instagram, Threads, and Facebook) have declared full compliance with the regulation.

Meutya underscored that compliance with PP TUNAS is not optional but a mandatory obligation for all electronic system operators.

The ministry will continue to conduct regular monitoring and evaluation and will take firm action against platforms that fail to meet the required standards.

Conclusion

The Indonesian government is intensifying its efforts to ensure safer digital environments for children, with TikTok setting an early example of compliance under PP TUNAS. While several major platforms have followed suit, others like Roblox still face regulatory gaps that must be addressed. Moving forward, authorities are expected to maintain strict oversight and enforcement to ensure all digital platforms prioritize child protection as a mandatory responsibility rather than a voluntary commitment.
