The Food and Agriculture Organization Began New Guideline Trials to Boost a More Sustainable Livestock Sector

2 weeks ago | Industrial Transformation

Jakarta, INTI - The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) launched the latest generation of global livestock environmental assessment instruments, the Global Livestock Environmental Assessment Model (GLEAM). FAO also began global trials of the Livestock Environmental Assessment and Performance Partnership (LEAP) guidelines, which focus on ecosystem services and the circular bioeconomy.

During the International Strategic Meeting on Scientific Pathways for Sustainable Livestock Industry Transformation on Friday, March 27, 2026, FAO said that Indonesia is the first country to implement this initiative, before expanding it to other countries worldwide.

"We are also initiating global trials of the FAO Livestock Environmental Assessment and Performance Partnership (LEAP) guidelines on ecosystem services and the circular bioeconomy, starting in Indonesia before expanding to other regions worldwide," stated FAO Representative for Indonesia and Timor Leste, Rajendra Aryal.

Rajendra stated that this step represents an important milestone in providing practical solutions for the transformation of the sustainable livestock sector globally, thus making the global livestock system more resilient and sustainable.

Transforming Sustainable Livestock Systems

Rajendra also said that the system is important in maintaining global food security, improving nutritional quality, supporting livestock farmers' livelihoods, and driving economic growth. However, this sector currently faces various complex pressures, ranging from increasing demand for animal protein, the impacts of climate change, to the threat of animal disease and environmental degradation. He believes these conditions demand a comprehensive transformation of the livestock system.

In this context, Rajendra highlighted the importance of the One Health approach as a strategic solution. This approach integrates human, animal, and environmental health to more effectively manage disease risks, antimicrobial resistance, and the impacts of climate change.

Furthermore, Rajendra emphasized that science-based innovation and cross-sector collaboration are key to driving this transformation. He believes this internal forum serves as an important platform to bridge the gap between science, policy, and practice on the ground.

Conclusion

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) launched the latest GLEAM and piloted the LEAP guidelines with Indonesia as the first country, to encourage the transformation of more sustainable livestock systems in the agriculture industry. The One Health approach is assessed as a strategic solution to this transformation. This approach aims to integrate the balance of sustainability and optimize the health of people, animals, and ecosystems.
