Jakarta, INTI - The Indonesia Data Center Provider Organization (IDPRO) is calling for stronger green energy and digital infrastructure ecosystems to support Indonesia’s rapidly growing data center industry, driven by rising demand for AI-powered computing.
IDPRO Chairman Hendra Suryakusuma said the rapid development of AI is creating increasingly attractive investment opportunities for Indonesia. The entry of several global neocloud players, with capacity requirements reaching hundreds of megawatts, highlights the country’s growing market potential while also creating greater demand for reliable electricity supplies and adequate renewable energy resources.
“More than 50% of IDPRO members have already committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2030,” Hendra said in an interview on the sidelines of IEE Series – Energy Week 2026 at JIExpo Kemayoran, Jakarta.
According to Hendra, these commitments have so far been supported partly through the use of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs). Going forward, closer collaboration among the government, state-owned electricity provider PLN, data center operators, and the renewable energy sector will become increasingly important to expand access to clean energy, particularly as electricity demand from AI-powered data centers continues to rise.
Expanding Data Centers Through Renewable Energy
IDPRO also sees opportunities to develop data centers across different regions of Indonesia by leveraging locally available renewable energy resources.
Such expansion could be supported by stronger interconnectivity, streamlined investment processes, and competitive incentives. The economic potential is substantial, considering that developing 1 MW of data center capacity requires an estimated investment of around US$10 million. Meanwhile, Indonesia’s total data center capacity is projected to reach 11 GW within the next three to five years.
Beyond infrastructure development, Hendra believes the growth of the data center industry could serve as an opportunity to strengthen Indonesia’s digital resilience and sovereignty.
Policies supporting the domestic storage of strategic data, along with stronger cybersecurity systems, could be developed in parallel with the government’s broader efforts to accelerate national digital transformation.
Strengthening Indonesia’s Digital Sovereignty
“Indonesia is one of the world’s largest users of digital platforms, yet most of the servers supporting these services are still located overseas,” Hendra said.
He believes strengthening digital infrastructure within Indonesia would allow the country to capture more investment opportunities arising from the rapid growth of AI while building a digital ecosystem that is more secure, sustainable, and competitive across the region.
With greater access to renewable energy, stronger digital infrastructure, and supportive investment policies, Indonesia has an opportunity to develop a data center ecosystem capable of meeting the growing demands of AI while advancing its ambitions as a regional digital hub.
