Jakarta, INTI - The Indonesian government, through the Ministry of Forestry, is strengthening impactful and innovative forestry cooperation with the Japan International Cooperation Agency during a bilateral meeting in Tokyo.

This agreement follows the directive of Prabowo Subianto to enhance bilateral relations between Indonesia and Japan, particularly in the forestry sector.

Minister of Forestry Raja Juli Antoni and JICA Senior Vice President Yoshifumi Yoshikawa discussed strengthening strategic cooperation focused on climate change mitigation, rehabilitation of degraded land, and the management of world-class conservation areas.

Strategic Focus of Forestry Cooperation

Raja Juli Antoni stated that the meeting was constructive, with both parties reaffirming their shared commitment to expanding ongoing collaboration while exploring new, more innovative and impactful partnership opportunities.

The Indonesian government emphasized its strong commitment to addressing climate change and accelerating land restoration efforts to ensure environmental sustainability and improve community welfare.

The Ministry of Forestry is also advancing a vision to develop conservation areas into World-Class National Parks, encompassing biodiversity protection, strong governance, best practices in ecotourism, and contributions to both local and global economies.

Mangrove Initiative and JICA’s Support

Raja Juli Antoni further highlighted an invitation for JICA to jointly strengthen the World Mangrove Center initiative, positioning it as a global platform for rehabilitation, research, education, and innovation in mangrove ecosystem management. The initiative is expected to serve as an international benchmark for nature-based climate mitigation and adaptation efforts.

JICA welcomed these initiatives and expressed readiness to support them through technical cooperation, funding, and the exchange of knowledge and technology.

The agency’s support has already made significant contributions to sustainable forest resource management and institutional capacity building in Indonesia.

This meeting marks an important milestone in reinforcing Indonesia–Japan partnerships in the forestry sector and underscores the strategic role of international collaboration in addressing global challenges such as climate change and environmental degradation.

Raja Juli Antoni concluded that strengthening technical forestry cooperation with JICA is part of broader efforts to deepen Indonesia–Japan relations, and forms part of President Prabowo Subianto’s state visit agenda to Japan.

Conclusion

Indonesia and Japan are reinforcing a forward-looking partnership in forestry by prioritizing innovation, sustainability, and climate resilience. Through strategic collaboration, technical support, and global initiatives such as mangrove ecosystem development, both countries aim to deliver tangible environmental and economic benefits while addressing pressing global challenges like climate change and land degradation.
