Jakarta, INTI - Indonesian satellite operator Telkomsat and French space-based connectivity infrastructure company Univity signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for a satellite connectivity collaboration in Indonesia.
Univity is building a satellite in VLEO to operate as a neutral space infrastructure for telecom operators to access satellite connectivity. Meanwhile, Telkomsat serves operators, enterprises, government agencies, and communities with satellite communications in Indonesia.
Exploration of Satellite Connectivity
The two companies will collaboratively assess potential uses for satellite connectivity, including Very Low Earth Orbit (VLEO) architecture, and future direct-to-device services. They also plan to explore satellite connectivity solutions for enterprise, mobility applications, and remote and hard-to-reach areas.
The MoU also includes the development of sovereign satellite connectivity for the Indonesian market through nationally hosted ground infrastructure interfacing with future VLEO constellations.
They will also evaluate hybrid multi-orbit architectures combining Telkomsat’s geostationary satellite network and Univity’s design-to-cost VLEO systems to deliver secure, resilient, and tailored telecom solutions.
“Indonesia is one of the world’s most dynamic connectivity markets, with opportunities for the convergence of terrestrial and space-based networks,” said Charles Delfieux, Founder and CEO of Univity.
Delfieux added that through the collaboration with Telkomsat, Univity looks forward to exploring how future satellite connectivity solutions will complement and support existing infrastructures.
Telkomsat’s Chief of Development, Anggoro K. Widiawan, stated that this collaboration will support Indonesia’s digital ecosystem, particularly the connectivity in remote areas.
"Satellite connectivity continues to play an important role in supporting Indonesia's digital ecosystem, particularly across remote and geographically dispersed areas. Through this MoU with Univity, we look forward to exploring how emerging satellite architectures and future non-terrestrial network capabilities could contribute to addressing evolving connectivity needs across the country,” said Anggoro.
Conclusion
Telkomsat and French-based company Univity have signed an MoU to explore the development of satellite connectivity services in Indonesia. This collaboration includes a study on the use of Very Low Earth Orbit (VLEO) satellites, direct-to-device services, and connectivity solutions for the enterprise, mobility, and remote areas. The two companies will also explore a hybrid architecture that combines Telkomsat's geostationary satellites with Univity's VLEO constellation to provide more secure and reliable telecommunications services.
