Protection of Women in the Digital Space Highlighted Amid Rising Online Safety Concerns

11 hours ago | Digital Technology

Jakarta, INTI - Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Meutya Hafid emphasized that the protection of women in the digital space is a top priority in advancing empowerment in today’s technology-driven era.

She delivered the statement in Jakarta on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, as digital access in Indonesia continues to expand, reaching around 80 percent of the population or more than 223 million people.

Expanding Access Must Be Matched with Stronger Protection

Meutya stated that the current challenge is no longer only about expanding digital access for women, but also ensuring their safety in using it.

She said, “If in the past we fought to open access, today the challenge is ensuring that access can be used safely and productively.”

She added, “When access becomes widely available, protection for women must become even stronger.”

According to her, threats such as financial fraud, exploitation, and harmful content remain real risks in the digital environment.

Government Policies and Protective Measures

As a concrete step, the government has implemented Government Regulation No. 17 of 2025 on the Governance of Electronic System Operators for Child Protection (PP Tunas).

The regulation includes restrictions on access for children under 16 years old to high-risk digital platforms and has been continuously strengthened since its implementation in 2026.

“We hope that through this regulation, not only children are protected, but the entire digital ecosystem becomes healthier,” Meutya said.

She also added, “Parents will also feel more at ease when their children and families are active in the digital world.”

In addition, she emphasized the importance of women’s participation in strategic decision-making to ensure more inclusive policies.

“Women and men are like two wings of a nation. If both move in balance, Indonesia will be able to fly higher in facing global challenges,” she concluded.

Conclusion

Indonesia is strengthening its digital governance by prioritizing the protection of women in the online space alongside expanding digital access. Through regulatory measures, such as child protection policies and broader digital safety frameworks, the government aims to build a safer, more inclusive, and more equitable digital ecosystem while ensuring empowerment in the technology era.
