Jakarta, INTI -The Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Kemenkomdigi) announced that the Wikimedia Foundation has officially begun the registration process as an Electronic System Provider (PSE), following intensive communication with the government to ensure its services availability in Indonesia.
Minister Meutya Hafid explained that the process reflects Wikimedia's commitment to complying with local regulations and strengthening national digital governance. At a press conference on Tuesday, April 28, Meutya said that Kemenkomdigi had coordinations with Wikimedia Foundation since April 23. Direct meetings with its representatives were also conducted at the ministry office.
This registration obligation is based on the legal basis of Government Regulation No. 71/2019 and Ministerial Regulation No. 5/2020. This regulation applies to all electronic system providers (PSE) without exception. All PSE must be registered with the state administration, including foreign, local, for-profit, and non-profit organizations.
The Wikimedia Foundation registration process is now entering the initial phase, which involves submitting administrative documents to the authorities. The government projects that all procedures will be completed within a short time.
Policy is in Effect Since 2019
Meutya stated that the PSE registration policy was not a sudden move, but rather an instrument that has been in effect since 2019 to guarantee consumer protection. The government specifically appreciates the cooperative from Wikimedia Foundation for respecting national digital sovereignty policies.
In a recent meeting, both parties reached a crucial understanding regarding the urgency of registration. Previously, the platform faced serious administrative challenges, including the potential for access to be blocked if requirements were not met. However, open dialogue between the government and representatives from San Francisco successfully mitigated this risk.
