WhatsApp will Reportedly Provide Users Its Own Encrypted Cloud Storage Feature

5 hours ago | Digital Technology

Jakarta, INTI - WhatsApp is reportedly developing a new feature that will allow users to back up their chats to the cloud service directly provided by WhatsApp. This feature will include an encryption system, further enhancing the security of user data.

Currently, WhatsApp users can back up their chats to Google Drive for Android and iCloud for iPhone. However, WhatsApp could potentially offer a standalone storage alternative in the future.

WhatsApp’s Cloud Features

According to a WABetaInfo report, Android users will have two backup options: Google Drive or WhatsApp's cloud storage. This service will reportedly offer 2 GB of free storage.

Unlike backups to Google Drive or iCloud, which currently have encryption as an option, backups to the WhatsApp cloud will make encryption a requirement.

Users will also be able to choose additional security methods, such as passkeys, passwords, and 64-digit encryption keys.

In addition to the free version, WhatsApp will also reportedly offer a storage plan of up to 50 GB for around US$0.99 per month. This plan could be a solution for users with large chat histories, as 2 GB is considered limited.

This feature is still in development, and it is not yet known when it will be widely released. Typically, new features are first available to beta users before being rolled out to the public.
