Preparing Future Schools for the Age of Artificial Intelligence

Jakarta, INTI - Despite Indonesia’s rapidly expanding internet access, broad connectivity alone does not automatically translate into digital readiness. In 2025, the country’s internet penetration rate reached 80.66%, with approximately 229.4 million people connected online, reflecting a year-on-year growth of 1.16%. However, the readiness of schools to adapt to the AI era still depends heavily on the quality of teachers, curriculum development, and the strengthening of digital ethics literacy.

The introduction of coding and artificial intelligence subjects starting from fifth grade signals a major shift in Indonesia’s education landscape, where technology literacy is now being developed at an earlier stage. Yet, global frameworks such as UNESCO’s AI competency guidelines emphasize that AI education should go beyond technical capabilities alone. Students must also be equipped with critical thinking skills, ethical awareness, digital responsibility, and an understanding of data security to navigate an increasingly AI-driven world.

As artificial intelligence becomes more integrated into education systems, the challenge is no longer merely about providing internet access or digital devices. The bigger task lies in ensuring that schools are capable of preparing students to use technology responsibly, creatively, and ethically in the future digital economy.

Conclusion 

Indonesia’s growing internet penetration marks important progress toward digital transformation, but connectivity alone is not enough to prepare schools for the AI era. As coding and AI education begin to enter classrooms at earlier levels, the focus must also expand toward teacher readiness, curriculum quality, critical thinking, and digital ethics. In the long term, building a digitally responsible generation will require not only access to technology, but also the ability to use AI safely, ethically, and intelligently.
