Power Industry Players Ready to Strengthen Energy and Food Security Through Hydropower Projects in West Java

11 hours ago | Green Industrial

Jakarta, INTI - Electricity industry players have expressed their readiness to support Indonesia’s energy resilience and food self-sufficiency through the development of hydropower plant (PLTA) projects in West Java.

Hydropower Projects Become a Key Clean Energy Solution

PT Berkat Cawan Group owner Albert Junior revealed that the company is currently developing two hydropower projects: the 99 MW Cibuni Hydropower Plant located in Sukabumi and Cianjur, and the 75 MW Cimandiri Hydropower Plant in Sukabumi.

“At present, both projects are being finalized by PT Berkat Cawan Energi,” he stated.

Albert added that the projects are expected to strengthen the national electricity supply while accelerating the transition toward clean energy.

In terms of licensing, the projects have completed the permit process and are scheduled to enter the construction phase in 2026.

Water Energy Seen as Supporting Agriculture

Albert emphasized that hydropower utilization not only generates electricity but also plays an important role in supporting agriculture and clean water management.

“There are three major benefits we can gain, electricity generation, agricultural support, and clean water management,” he said.

According to him, energy security is closely linked to food security because electricity supply affects the entire agricultural production chain.

He further noted, “Indonesia has abundant rivers, so the country should not always rely on other energy sources.”

Albert also highlighted the importance of transitioning away from fossil fuels such as coal toward renewable hydropower as a long-term strategic solution.

Conclusion

Hydropower development in West Java is expected to strengthen Indonesia’s clean energy transition while also supporting food security and sustainable water management. With abundant natural water resources, the projects reflect growing efforts from the private sector to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and build long-term national energy resilience.
