Jakarta, INTI - PT PLN (Persero) has presented plans for the development of the Kupang II Gas Engine Power Plant (PLTMG), which will be constructed in the West Kupang area of Kupang Regency. The project is part of the company’s efforts to strengthen the electricity system across mainland Timor, Nusa Tenggara Timur, by adding 30 megawatts of power capacity.
The construction of PLTMG Kupang II is included in the Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL), aimed at improving the reliability of electricity supply while expanding energy access for local communities. The project is designed to strengthen the interconnected power system in the Kupang region and surrounding areas, which continue to face challenges in ensuring equal electricity access in several remote locations.
Environmental Assessment and Regional Development Support
In addition to technical considerations, PLN emphasized that all planning stages have undergone comprehensive environmental assessments, including Environmental Impact Analysis (AMDAL) as well as Environmental Management and Monitoring Efforts (UKL-UPL). The studies concluded that the project is not expected to create significant environmental impacts on surrounding areas.
PLN also highlighted the importance of support from local governments and communities to ensure the construction process proceeds smoothly and according to schedule. The company stated that collaboration among stakeholders is essential to maximizing the benefits of this strategic project for the public.
With the development of PLTMG Kupang II, electricity supply in Kupang Regency and nearby regions is expected to become more stable, helping to stimulate economic growth, improve public services, and support sustainable development in Nusa Tenggara Timur.
