Jakarta, INTI - PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy Tbk (PGE) is targeting an increase in geothermal power generation capacity of 1 gigawatt (GW) by 2028 as part of its efforts to support the acceleration of the national energy transition.
Corporate Secretary of PGE, Muhammad Taufik, stated that the company has also set a long-term target to increase installed capacity to 1.7 GW by 2032.
"We have a target of 1 gigawatt in 2028 and 1.7 gigawatts in 2032. That's our target," he said on Friday, June 26, 2026.
Taufik said that this target is challenging but still realistic. This target is supported by the company's vast geothermal resource potential across its operating areas.
3 GW Geothermal Potential
He revealed that PGE currently has a total geothermal resource potential of approximately 3 GW, which has been mapped across all of the company's geothermal working areas.
"Meanwhile, the 3 gigawatts actually represent the entire potential within PGE's geothermal working areas. From all these working areas, PGE has been mapped to have potential resources of up to 3 gigawatts," he explained.
Taufik added that the development of generating capacity will be carried out in stages and will continue to adhere to the needs of the national electricity system, as outlined in PLN's 2025–2034 Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL).
Green Financing
To support this expansion, PGE has also secured green financing commitments from several international financial institutions. This funding has received government approval through the Green Book scheme.
"We also heard that PGE recently received a Green Book loan from several agencies, already approved by the government. So, those are our efforts to achieve the targets we have set," Taufik said.
PGE currently manages 15 Geothermal Working Areas with a total installed capacity of 1,932 megawatts (MW). This capacity consists of 727 MW of independently operated power plants and 1,205 MW of joint operation facilities.
Conclusion
Pertamina Geothermal Energy is targeting an increase in geothermal power generation capacity of up to 1 GW by 2028 and increasing to 1.7 GW by 2032 as part of its support for the national energy transition. According to PGE Corporate Secretary, Muhammad Taufik, the target is considered realistic because the company has potential geothermal resources of around 3 GW across its working areas. To support the expansion, PGE has also obtained green funding commitments from several international financial institutions through the government-approved Green Book scheme.
