BRIN Strengthens Kampung Nelayan Merah Putih Operations with Solar-Powered Technology

5 hours ago | Green Industrial

Jakarta, INTI - The Head of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), Arif Satria, stated that the agency will strengthen the Kampung Nelayan Merah Putih (KNMP) priority program through the use of solar-powered technology.

"BRIN is committed to ensuring that this solar technology directly impacts the economic pulse of grassroots communities, one way being through the integration of supporting innovations into the Kampung Nelayan Program," said Arif in Jakarta on Sunday, August 16, 2026.

Arif noted that BRIN has already applied solar power to operate Smart Feed Spreader technology in the aquaculture sector. By utilizing solar energy, this feed-spreading system operates automatically, efficiently, and under full control, without burdening fish farmers with electricity costs. BRIN is also facilitating the commercialization of solar-powered drying equipment for fishery products.

"This practical solution ensures that the drying process for fishermen's catches is faster and more hygienic, while also being highly cost-effective regarding operations compared to conventional drying methods," said Arif.

Improving Local Fishermen Welfare

Previously, President Prabowo Subianto set a target to have 1,386 KNMP units established and operational by the end of December 2026, as part of an effort to improve fishermen's welfare while optimizing Indonesia's marine economic potential.

These villages are equipped with various facilities to support fishermen's activities, ranging from harbors, fish auction sites, cold storage, and workshops to seafood processing facilities, housing, and social amenities.

President Prabowo views the development of the Kampung Nelayan program as a crucial step toward making the ocean a source of prosperity for Indonesian fishermen.

"Today, 100 Kampung Nelayan have been built. Our target is to have 1,386 Kampung Nelayan established and operational by the end of December 2026," said President Prabowo on August 14, 2026.

Conclusion

The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) will strengthen the KNMP program by implementing solar-powered technology to support the productivity of coastal communities. BRIN has developed a solar-powered Smart Feed Spreader for the aquaculture sector, capable of operating automatically without increasing electricity costs for fishermen.
