Jakarta, INTI - Pertamina continues to strengthen its commitment in maintaining national energy security while encouraging the transition to cleaner and more sustainable energy. The company implements continuous carbon emission reduction programs across all business lines as part of supporting the Net Zero Emission (NZE) target and increasing energy efficiency, initiated by the government.
As of February 2026, the company has successfully reduced emissions by 354,609 tons of CO₂e, or 112% of the current period's target. Pertamina's Vice President of Corporate Communication, Muhammad Baron, stated that this achievement was driven by the consistent implementation of energy efficiency programs from upstream to downstream sectors.
He also emphasized the importance of the community's role in using energy efficiently and wisely to support energy sustainability and maintain supply stability amid global dynamics, along with operational efficiency and technology innovation by companies and institutions.
Pertamina’s Subholdings Contributed
Operationally, Pertamina’s achievement in emission reductions came from all subholdings, with the upstream sector recording the highest performance, followed by downstream and gas. Meanwhile, other subholdings, such as Pertamina New & Renewable Energy and Integrated Marine Logistics, continue to strengthen decarbonization initiatives through electrification, energy efficiency, and clean energy development.
Pertamina is also strengthening its internal policies, including the implementation of internal carbon pricing, the development of low-carbon projects, and the integration of sustainability principles into its business strategy.
Carbon Emission Reduction by 2026
With positive results in early 2026, the company is targeting an emission reduction of around 1.96 million tons of CO₂e by the end of the year. This target is supported by various strategic programs such as fuel gas efficiency, optimization of refinery operations, the use of biofuels, and the utilization of solar power plants (PLTS).
Furthermore, Pertamina is developing programs that will involve the community, like the Independent Energy Village (Desa Energi Berdikari) program, to encourage the use of clean energy in rural areas while simultaneously boosting the local economy.
With these initiatives, Pertamina has successfully maintained a medium ESG Risk Rating according to Sustainalytics and is ranked first out of 54 global companies in the integrated oil and gas sub-industry. Looking ahead, the company is optimistic about achieving its annual decarbonization target while strengthening its position as a leader in a sustainable and environmentally friendly energy transition.
Conclusion
Pertamina recorded a reduction in carbon emissions of 354,609 tons of CO₂e by February 2026 as part of the company’s commitment to Net Zero Emissions by 2060. This achievement was driven by energy efficiency programs across all business lines and contributions from all subholdings. Pertamina also targets an emission reduction of 1.96 million tons of CO₂e by 2026, supported by the development of clean energy, internal policies such as carbon pricing, and community-based programs.
