Oracle Expands to Batam: A New Data Center to Strengthen Cloud Technology in Southeast Asia

1 year ago | Data Center and Cloud Computing

Jakarta, INTI – Oracle Corporation, a technology company based in the United States, is considering establishing a cloud service center in Batam, Riau Islands. This move is part of Oracle's expansion strategy to broaden its data center portfolio in the Southeast Asian region.

According to a Bloomberg report, Oracle is currently in discussions with the Indonesian government regarding the potential construction of this data center. Batam, particularly Nongsa Digital Park, is being considered as a location due to its status as home to several other data centers.

Why Oracle is Eyeing Batam

Several factors make Batam an attractive choice for Oracle:

  1. Free Trade Zone: Batam holds the status of a free trade zone, offering various economic incentives for foreign investors.
  2. Proximity to Singapore and Malaysia: Strategically located off the southern coast of Singapore, Batam serves as a key access point to the ASEAN technology market.
  3. A Growing Digital Ecosystem: Nongsa Digital Park has attracted various technology companies and provides infrastructure that supports data center development.

Although this plan is still in its early stages and not yet final, Oracle’s expansion into Batam reflects a broader trend in the technology industry. Major companies such as Meta and Google are also expanding their data center infrastructure across Asia to support the growth of artificial intelligence (AI) services and cloud technology.

Investment Potential and Economic Impact

As of now, there are no details on the investment value Oracle will allocate for this project. However, if realized, the establishment of this data center has the potential to bring positive impacts to the local economy, including job creation and increased technology investment in Indonesia.

Oracle already operates two cloud service centers in Singapore and last year announced a USD 6.5 billion plan to build a similar facility in Malaysia. With this expansion plan into Indonesia, Oracle is further strengthening its presence in Southeast Asia.

So far, neither Oracle nor the Indonesian Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs has provided an official response regarding the ongoing discussions. However, further developments on this plan will be closely monitored by both the technology and economic sectors in Indonesia.

Conclusion

Oracle’s plan to establish a data center in Batam demonstrates the company's commitment to expanding cloud services in Southeast Asia. With its strategic location and free trade zone incentives, Batam is an appealing choice for global technology companies. If realized, this investment has the potential to enhance Indonesia’s competitiveness in the technology sector, create jobs, and accelerate the adoption of cloud computing in the country.
