OpenClaw Developer Peter Steinberger Officially Joins OpenAI to Build Next-Generation AI Agents

2 months ago | Artificial Intelligence

Jakarta, INTI - Austrian developer Peter Steinberger, the creator behind the artificial intelligence–based personal assistant software OpenClaw, has officially joined the artificial intelligence research and development company OpenAI.

OpenClaw is an open-source project designed to build artificial intelligence assistants capable of performing various tasks independently without human intervention.

AI agents built through the OpenClaw platform are able to manage calendars, book flight tickets, and join social networks populated by other AI assistants.

The platform also supports Moltbook, a controversial social media platform designed specifically for AI bots.

Safety, Scale, and Research Drive the Move to OpenAI

Steinberger explained his decision to join OpenAI by saying that “It requires broader change, more thinking about how to do it safely, as well as access to the latest models and research.”

He also stated that “Ultimately, I felt OpenAI was the best place to continue pushing my vision and expanding its reach.”

Steinberger said that OpenClaw would not be turned into a company, but would instead transition into a foundation in order to remain an open-source project and retain the freedom to grow.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced on the social media platform X that Steinberger would help the company build the next generation of personal AI agents.

Sam Altman stated that AI agents will soon become the core of the services offered by OpenAI.

The announcement of Steinberger’s joining came one week after OpenAI launched Frontier, a platform aimed at helping companies build, deploy, and manage AI agents.

OpenAI claims that the Frontier platform equips AI agents with capabilities similar to human coworkers, including real-time learning through feedback.

Conclusion

The arrival of Peter Steinberger at OpenAI signals a strategic push toward the development of next-generation autonomous AI agents capable of handling complex, real-world tasks. By combining OpenClaw’s open-source foundations with OpenAI’s advanced research and large-scale models, the collaboration is expected to accelerate safer, smarter, and more practical AI systems.

As AI agents become central to digital services and enterprise operations, this move strengthens OpenAI’s position in shaping the future of intelligent automation while preserving the open innovation ecosystem that fueled OpenClaw’s success.
