Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Meutya Hafid: Digitalization of MSMEs as a Key to Empowering Local Economy

1 year ago | Digital Economy

Jakarta, INTI - In the midst of rapid globalization and technological advancements, digitalization emerges as a crucial solution for enhancing the competitiveness and sustainability of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). This sentiment was passionately expressed by Indonesia’s Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, Meutya Hafid, during the event titled "Upscaling MSMEs Digital: Digitalize Culture through Technology," held at Kampung Wisata Keramik Dinoyo, Malang, East Java, on Saturday, January 4, 2025.

The event brought together over 100 local MSME entrepreneurs with the mission of strengthening their businesses by embracing digital transformation. Kampung Dinoyo, a renowned center for artistic ceramic production, was chosen as a prime example of how digitalization can revolutionize cultural heritage-based businesses and boost local economic growth.

Kampung Dinoyo: Bridging Cultural Heritage and Technology

Kampung Wisata Keramik Dinoyo has long been celebrated as a hub for unique ceramic craftsmanship, deeply rooted in the artistic traditions of the region. The area is home to 23 MSME kiosks specializing in producing and selling handcrafted ceramics, ranging from household items to decorative pieces.

Each production cycle generates an income of approximately 4 to 5 million rupiah for these entrepreneurs, while monthly revenues often reach 20 to 24 million rupiah. Collectively, these businesses contribute to a 40% economic boost for the Dinoyo area, showcasing the profound impact of MSMEs on the local economy.

During an interactive dialogue with the local entrepreneurs, Minister Meutya Hafid expressed her admiration for the community's dedication to preserving and innovating their cultural heritage. "Kampung Wisata Keramik Dinoyo serves as living proof that traditional crafts, when combined with the right digital tools, can transcend local boundaries and thrive on the global stage. This isn’t just about business; it’s about celebrating our cultural identity and creating new opportunities for our people," said Meutya.

Digitalization for MSMEs: Expanding Markets and Enhancing Efficiency

At the event, the Ministry provided intensive training for MSME entrepreneurs on utilizing digital platforms such as e-commerce, social media, and digital payment applications. This initiative aimed to equip them with the tools needed to expand their markets, streamline operations, and remain competitive in an increasingly digital economy.

Minister Meutya underscored that one of the primary challenges faced by MSMEs is limited access to technology and digital infrastructure. To address this, the government is committed to providing reliable internet infrastructure, particularly in tourism areas like Dinoyo, ensuring equitable access to technology for all MSMEs across Indonesia.

"We want to ensure that technology becomes a bridge, not a barrier, for our MSMEs. With the right infrastructure and knowledge, they can not only survive but thrive in the digital era," Meutya emphasized.

In addition to training, the government launched a series of ongoing support programs to facilitate the digital transformation journey for MSMEs. These include digital marketing assistance, data analytics training, and the integration of financial technology solutions.

Digitalization as a Pillar of Inclusive Economic Growth

Minister Meutya highlighted that digitalization is not merely about introducing new technologies but about empowering communities. "Digitalization is a tool to create a more inclusive economy where everyone, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to grow. It’s about leveraging technology to elevate not just businesses but also the communities behind them," she explained.

The Minister expressed her optimism that the Dinoyo model would inspire other MSMEs across the nation to embrace digital transformation. "Indonesia has extraordinary potential. By collaborating with various stakeholders—government, private sector, and academia—we can build a robust and sustainable digital ecosystem that supports MSMEs and preserves our cultural heritage," she added.

Real Stories of Digital Transformation

The event also provided a platform for MSME entrepreneurs to share their success stories. For instance, Andi, a ceramic artisan from Dinoyo, shared how embracing e-commerce has significantly expanded his market reach. "Initially, I was hesitant, but after seeing the results, I’m a firm believer in digitalization. My products are now being sold in Japan and the United States, something I never imagined before," he shared proudly.

This sentiment was echoed by other artisans who noted the tangible benefits of digital marketing in attracting a wider audience and increasing sales. "Social media has been a game-changer for us. It allows us to showcase our products to people who would never have known about us otherwise," said one of the participants.

Digitalization and the Future of MSMEs in Indonesia

Indonesia's MSME sector plays a critical role in the national economy, contributing to 61% of the country’s GDP and providing employment for over 97% of the workforce. However, without embracing digital transformation, these businesses risk falling behind in an increasingly competitive global market.

The government’s efforts to accelerate digitalization are not only about economic growth but also about preserving Indonesia’s rich cultural diversity. Kampung Wisata Keramik Dinoyo exemplifies how technology can breathe new life into traditional crafts, ensuring their relevance and sustainability for future generations.

Collaboration for a Digital Future

In her closing remarks, Minister Meutya called for collective action to ensure the success of the digitalization agenda for MSMEs. "This is not a task for the government alone. It requires the collective efforts of all stakeholders—businesses, academia, and the community. Together, we can create a future where MSMEs thrive, our cultural heritage is celebrated, and Indonesia takes its rightful place in the global economy," she concluded.

The event at Kampung Wisata Keramik Dinoyo serves as an inspiring example of what can be achieved when tradition meets technology. It underscores the importance of innovation, collaboration, and community empowerment in building a resilient and inclusive economy for Indonesia.
