Jakarta, INTI – Artificial Intelligence (AI) is no longer just a supporting tool; it has become an integral part of how people work especially in Indonesia. This insight comes from Microsoft’s newly released Work Trend Index 2025, which highlights how AI is reshaping organizational structures, work culture, and human roles within teams.
The survey, conducted across 31 countries including Indonesia, reveals that a majority of Indonesian employees now prefer to rely on AI over their coworkers for certain tasks. Easy access, 24/7 availability, and AI’s speed and creative capabilities are the main reasons behind this growing preference.
Business Leaders Are Ready to Rethink Strategy with AI
A significant 97% of business leaders in Indonesia believe that 2025 is a critical year to reevaluate their core business strategies and operations. This number exceeds the global average, reflecting a strong commitment to digital transformation. Furthermore, 59% have already implemented AI agents to automate work higher than the Asia-Pacific average of 53%.
In the next five years, these leaders anticipate a deeper integration of AI, including redesigning workflows (48%), building multi-agent systems (63%), enhancing training (69%), and directly managing AI agents (58%).
Employees See AI as a Work Partner
Employees are also embracing AI at an impressive rate. The survey shows that 48% of workers prefer using AI over asking colleagues for help, mainly because AI is always available. 28% cite speed as the main advantage, and 38% value AI’s creative thinking.
Interestingly, 66% of employees consider AI a discussion partner, not just a tool. Meanwhile, 33% see AI as something more complex than a machine that follows commands.
Toward the Frontier Firm: A New Organizational Structure
According to Dharma Simorangkir, President Director of Microsoft Indonesia, the report illustrates how companies are shifting away from traditional hierarchies to more flexible, AI-powered ecosystems. Future-ready organizations referred to in the report as Frontier Firms blend human intelligence with AI systems to enable smarter workflows and collaborative decision-making.
“A Frontier Firm is not just about a new business model, but a massive opportunity for Indonesia to leap forward, drive innovation, and strengthen global competitiveness,” Dharma stated.
Three Phases to Becoming a Future-Ready Company
Microsoft outlines three key phases in the journey toward becoming a Frontier Firm:
- AI functions as an assistant, handling repetitive tasks.
- AI becomes a digital coworker, supporting project planning and research.
- AI autonomously manages workflows, while humans focus on strategic decisions and step in only when necessary.
The report shows that 88% of workers feel overwhelmed, while 95% of business leaders believe AI agents can expand team capacity in the next 1–2 years. More than half have made digital workforce expansion a top priority, followed by workforce training and upskilling.
Bridging the AI Understanding Gap
Despite business leaders recognizing the value of AI, a significant gap remains in understanding between them and their teams. 87% of leaders understand AI agent concepts, but only 56% of employees do.
Dharma sees this gap as “a call to action”, not just a statistic. He urges companies to invest in AI literacy and develop a balanced human-agent ratio to enable seamless collaboration. The goal is to create a work culture where everyone can become an “agent boss” someone who leads alongside AI.
Conclusion
Microsoft’s Work Trend Index 2025 reveals that Indonesia is entering a new phase of digital transformation. AI is no longer a passive tool it’s an active partner in productivity. With the right strategy and investments, Indonesian companies are well-positioned to become Frontier Firms future-ready organizations that are smarter, more inclusive, and globally competitive.
