Microsoft is Still Committed to Its Carbon Removal Programs

4 days ago | Green Industrial

Jakarta, INTI - Microsoft has denied speculations that the company will halt development of carbon removal technology. Microsoft Chief Sustainability Officer, Melanie Nakagawa, said in a written statement for Bloomberg that the company’s carbon removal program has not ended.

“We continue to both build on and support our existing portfolio of both nature-based and technology-based solutions,” she added.

This statement comes after a Heatmap report indicated that the US technology company had temporarily halted the purchase of carbon reduction services. Separately, Bloomberg also reported that Microsoft employees had contacted project developers to inform them that several carbon reduction projects were being postponed.

Microsoft May Make Adjustments, not Halting

In response, Nakagawa emphasized that Microsoft may make adjustments in its approach to reducing its carbon footprint, but that does not mean the company is backing away from its climate commitments.

“Our decarbonization approach combines reduction, removal, and efficiency, and carbon removal is one piece of that equation,” she said. “At times, we may adjust the pace or volume of our carbon removal procurement as we continue to refine our approach toward sustainability goals. Any adjustments we make are part of our disciplined approach, not a change in ambition.”

Microsoft is by far the largest investor in carbon removal credits, with an ambitious goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2030. Large-scale carbon removal efforts are considered crucial to avoid further global warming, although the current global capacity to absorb carbon from the atmosphere remains far below what scientists estimate is necessary.

Conclusion

Microsoft maintains its commitment to carbon removal despite reports of project delays. Melanie Nakagawa stated that the investment adjustments are only part of a more structured strategy, not a reduction in climate ambition. As a major investor in the carbon removal market and with a 2030 carbon-neutral target, Microsoft continues to rely on a combination of emissions reductions, carbon sequestration, and efficiency.
