BRIN Encourages the Use of Digital Systems to Strengthen Indonesia’s Agricultural Sector

Jakarta, INTI - The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) continues to promote digital transformation in the agricultural sector by strengthening its digital-based farming recording system. This step is considered a crucial foundation for increasing production efficiency, productivity, and the competitiveness of national horticulture through data-driven decision-making.

This commitment was conveyed in the HortiActive #28 webinar titled "Digitalizing Farming Recording to Achieve Efficient Horticultural Production," held by the Research Center for Horticulture, Research Organization Agriculture and Food (ORPP) BRIN, on Tuesday, July 28, 2026.

The Head of ORPP BRIN, Puji Lestari, emphasized that digitalization has become a fundamental necessity for the modern agricultural sector. According to her, technological developments and market dynamics demand a more adaptive, efficient production system supported by accurate data.

"Digitalization is no longer an option, but a necessity. Through technology, we can build a smarter, more scalable, and more sustainable horticultural production system, from recording production inputs and operational costs to harvest yields," said Puji.

She hopes that the farming business recording application will make it easier for farmers to document all their business activities. She also added that the successful implementation of this technology still requires mentoring and collaboration from various parties to improve farmers' digital literacy.

Similarly, the Head of the Research Center for Horticulture, Dwinita Wikan Utami, explained that digital recording is not simply a replacement for conventional methods, but a foundation for building a smarter and more sustainable horticultural production system.

"Through good recording, farmers can manage their farming businesses more efficiently, understand profitability levels, and make decisions based on accurate data," said Dwinita.

According to her, successful digital transformation requires synergy between researchers, academics, government, business actors, and farmers so that the innovations developed can be widely adopted and have a real impact on improving farmers' welfare.

Decision Making Based on Data

Meanwhile, Abdul Latif, an engineer at the Research Center for Horticulture, emphasized that digital recording is an effort to build a culture of data-driven decision-making, not simply transferring manual records into an application.

"When the entire production process is properly recorded, farmers can accurately determine costs, measure efficiency, control risks, and develop production strategies that align with market needs. This is the foundation for a more productive, efficient, and competitive horticultural system," he said.

Abdul Latif explained that recording, which encompasses four main pillars: input, process, yield, and marketing, allows farmers to evaluate business efficiency comprehensively. Efficient production, he explained, is the result of a well-designed control system, allowing each production factor to be managed in an integrated manner.

On the same occasion, Wawan Dinawan, a Digital Agriculture Application Facilitator and founder of Agribis.id, stated that the main challenge in digitizing farming businesses is not the technology, but rather a change in work culture. Many farmers still rely on inherited experience and consider record-keeping a complicated process. 

He introduced the Usaha Tani application, which allows farmers to record data in real time via smartphones. The application features a simple interface, a One-Page One-Task concept, and gamification features designed to facilitate technology adoption at the farmer level.

By strengthening the digitalization of agricultural business records, BRIN hopes to create a more modern, efficient, and competitive horticultural agriculture ecosystem. With data-driven management, farmers will not only be able to increase productivity and profitability but also have stronger competitiveness in facing future agricultural challenges.
