Jakarta, INTI - PT Medco Energi Internasional Tbk (MedcoEnergi) has reduced methane emissions by approximately 1,100 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO₂e) per year through the implementation of nitrogen gas blanketing technology at the Suban oil and gas facility in the Corridor Block, South Sumatra. The initiative is carried out by its subsidiary, Medco E&P Grissik Ltd., as part of efforts to strengthen low-emission upstream operations.
MedcoEnergi applies nitrogen gas blanketing systems to storage tanks to suppress gas releases, particularly methane, while also improving operational efficiency across the facility. The move demonstrates that emission reduction efforts can go hand in hand with asset performance optimization.
MedcoEnergi Director and Chief Operating Officer Ronald Gunawan stated that controlling methane emissions is a key component of how the company operates responsibly. “Our commitment does not stop at reducing emissions, but also extends to how those emissions are measured, managed, and reported in a credible manner,” Ronald said in Jakarta on Tuesday, February 3, 2026.
Strengthening Emissions Governance and Net-Zero Pathway
The adoption of nitrogen gas blanketing technology further strengthens MedcoEnergi’s structured emissions management framework. The company has positioned methane reduction as a priority, given its significant contribution to overall greenhouse gas emissions from upstream oil and gas activities.
The Corridor Block initiative also aligns with MedcoEnergi’s participation in the Oil & Gas Methane Partnership (OGMP) 2.0, a global standard that promotes transparency and accuracy in methane emissions measurement and reporting. Through this framework, the company enhances emissions data governance and operational accountability.
Ronald emphasized that methane reduction goes beyond regulatory compliance and reflects the company’s long-term business direction. “Methane emission reduction is not merely about technology, but about how we operate in a more sustainable and resilient manner,” he said.
MedcoEnergi reported that its emissions reduction performance has exceeded its 2025 targets and remains on track toward its 2030 interim goals. The company is committed to expanding the use of energy efficiency and low-emission technologies in support of its Net Zero Emissions ambition for Scope 1 and 2 by 2050, and Scope 3 by 2060.
Conclusion
MedcoEnergi’s deployment of nitrogen gas blanketing at the Corridor Block highlights how practical technological solutions can deliver measurable emissions reductions while strengthening operational performance. By aligning methane mitigation with global reporting standards and long-term net-zero targets, the company positions sustainability not as a compliance obligation, but as a core driver of resilient and responsible energy operations.
