Jakarta, INTI - Indonesia's Government Digital Transformation Acceleration Committee (KPTDP) has stepped up efforts to modernize public administration through digitalization and artificial intelligence (AI). The initiative was discussed during a meeting between KPTDP Chairman Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan and former UK Prime Minister and Executive Chairman of the Tony Blair Institute (TBI), Tony Blair, at the National Economic Council (DEN) office in Jakarta on Monday, July 6, 2026.
The government's digital transformation agenda aims to deliver public services that are simpler, faster, more transparent, and more reliable while fundamentally reshaping policymaking, public service delivery, and citizen engagement through a Human-Centered Design approach.
AI and Digital Infrastructure Drive Government Transformation
Luhut emphasized that integrating digital government with AI can improve coordination across sectors while addressing complex public service challenges.
"Digital government supported by AI is the best solution for implementing the President's priority programs. We cannot afford to miss this opportunity because digital government enables greater efficiency, transparency, and reduces unnecessary face-to-face administrative processes," Luhut said.
He explained that Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) serves as the technological foundation of Indonesia's digital government strategy, including its implementation in the country's social protection system.
Beyond modernizing government operations, the transformation is intended to improve citizens' experiences by making public services more accessible, efficient, and accountable.
KPTDP has already completed pilot projects for the digitalization of social assistance programs in Banyuwangi Regency and is preparing to expand implementation to 42 cities and regencies, including Batam and Bali. The pilot program demonstrated improvements in the speed and transparency of social assistance distribution.
The committee also hopes its collaboration with Tony Blair and the TBI team will expand AI adoption in social protection, healthcare, education, business services, and AI governance while ensuring data security, accountability, and regulatory compliance.
Luhut added that the government is prioritizing the development of a secure and trusted digital ecosystem alongside a forthcoming presidential regulation that will formalize Indonesia's digital government framework.
"AI plays a vital role in analyzing digital identity data, improving efficiency, and optimizing tax revenue collection," he said.
Tony Blair Praises Indonesia's Digital Progress
Tony Blair commended Indonesia's progress in implementing digital government despite the challenges posed by its large population and archipelagic geography.
"The most important aspect of digital government is how technology is implemented. From what I have heard today, Indonesia has significantly shortened administrative service processes from taking a long time to just a matter of days," Blair said.
He noted that sustained digital transformation requires strong collaboration across government agencies and a workforce equipped with digital capabilities and the right mindset.
"Government programs must be integrated, and the teams responsible for implementation need to be well-trained and possess a digital mindset," he added.
Meanwhile, Minister of Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform Rini Widyantini highlighted the importance of Digital Public Infrastructure, which integrates digital identity, trusted data exchange, and digital payment systems while maintaining strong data protection and cybersecurity standards.
She explained that Indonesia's digital social protection system combines digital identity, secure data exchange, digital payments, and a unified Social Protection Portal to create a more integrated, transparent, and citizen-centered service model.
Rini emphasized that sustainable nationwide implementation will depend on sound policies, effective governance, strong institutional leadership, and close collaboration among government agencies.
"We greatly welcome the involvement of global partners, including the Tony Blair Institute. Your experience in public sector reform and digital transformation has inspired many countries, including Indonesia, and your continued support will be invaluable," she said.
Conclusion
Indonesia is accelerating its digital government agenda by integrating AI and Digital Public Infrastructure to improve the efficiency, transparency, and accessibility of public services. Through collaboration with international partners such as the Tony Blair Institute, the government aims to build a secure, citizen-centered digital ecosystem that supports long-term public sector innovation and national development.
