Kemkomdigi: AI Regulations are Being Developed to Boost Innovation and Productivity

2 hours ago | Artificial Intelligence

Jakarta, INTI - The Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Kemkomdigi) stated that the government's regulations on the adoption and innovation of artificial intelligence (AI) are intended to encourage the more productive use of this technology.

Edwin Hidayat Abdullah, Director General of Digital Ecosystems at Kemkomdigi, stated at the inauguration of the Digital Ecosystem Alignment (DEAL) 2026 that there is still a gap between the level of AI adoption by the Indonesian public and the productivity generated from its use.

"People say, 'Why is the government regulating AI? This isn't compliance; it's an enabler. This is something that paves the way. This is where AI can be more productive," said Edwin.

High Usage of AI

Edwin stated that research shows that around 80 percent of Indonesians have used AI. However, the technology's contribution to increased productivity has only reached around 13 percent. Therefore, the government is encouraging the development of a national AI ecosystem through priority measures expected to increase the productivity impact of using this technology.

"The government has stated that if these priorities are implemented, AI productivity can grow even further," said Edwin.

AI development also needs to be accompanied by good governance to prevent misuse of the technology, such as for deepfakes, digital fraud, or other forms of cybercrime.

"So that AI is no longer synonymous with deepfakes, fraud, or scams," Edwin added.

AI Regulation 2026 Target

Minister of Komdigi, Meutya Hafid, on Thursday, June 11, revealed the latest developments in the Presidential Regulation (Perpres) to regulate the governance of AI innovation development in Indonesia. Kemkomdigi is currently holding public consultations with several US companies and making adjustments to the draft policy.

"We held a re-discussion yesterday, and we have adopted the input to find a balance between innovation and security," said Meutya.

Meutya stated that the updated draft has been completed and submitted to the State Secretariat for processing as soon as possible into a legal regulation. The regulation is targeted to be released in 2026.

Conclusion

Kemkomdigi emphasized that the artificial intelligence (AI) regulations currently being drafted aim to encourage more productive AI use, not just for compliance. Although approximately 80 percent of Indonesians already use AI, its contribution to productivity only reaches around 13 percent. The government is also encouraging the development of a national AI ecosystem through various strategic priorities to increase its productivity impact. The draft Presidential Regulation (Perpres) on AI governance has a target date for publication in 2026.
