Jakarta, INTI – The flash floods that struck several regions in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra have once again created major challenges for residents’ connectivity, especially as conventional communication networks were cut off. This situation prompted the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Kemkomdigi) to take swift action by deploying SATRIA-1 satellite–based emergency internet services. The recovery effort was announced during the disaster response agenda on Friday, November, 21, 2025 as a solution to restore access to information amid a crisis that disrupted thousands of local communication lines.
SATRIA-1 Becomes the Solution When Traditional Networks Fail
Kemkomdigi has prepared 10 emergency internet service points to restore networks that have been down since the disaster occurred. Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Meutya Hafid emphasized that providing emergency internet access is a top priority for the government.
“When communication networks are cut off, SATRIA-1 becomes a lifesaver. Through this system, residents can reconnect even when ground connectivity infrastructure is disrupted,” Meutya said in an official statement on Sunday.
SATRIA-1 helps reopen essential communication channels, both for affected residents and field personnel.
SATRIA-1 Coverage for Remote and Hard-to-Reach Areas
As a satellite designed to reach remote, outermost, and underserved (3T) areas, SATRIA-1 has the capability to remain operational even when terrestrial infrastructure is damaged or inaccessible. This makes it a vital component in large-scale disaster response.
Meutya also urged the public to stay alert, follow the instructions of emergency personnel, and use the emergency internet access to obtain verified information from the government.
Field Teams Move Quickly to Install Emergency Internet
Teams from BAKTI Komdigi, together with BNPB, SAR teams, and the Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI), have mobilized equipment to the designated installation sites. All locations are targeted to become operational as soon as possible to support emergency communication, rescue coordination, and aid distribution in the field.
The SATRIA-1 installation points include:
North Sumatra:
- Pinangsori/Dr. Fredric Lumban Tobing Airport
- SMAN 1 Plus Matauli Pandan
Aceh:
- Baitul Gafur Mosque (North Aceh)
- Aceh Command Center (Central Aceh)
- Lhokseumawe Mayor’s Office
- Langsa City
- East Aceh
- Aceh Tamiang
West Sumatra:
- Jorong Bukik Malanca, Nagari Malalak Timur (Agam)
- BNPB Regional Office, West Sumatra (Padang)
Conclusion
The activation of SATRIA-1 emergency internet demonstrates the government’s commitment to ensuring communication remains accessible in disaster-affected areas. With the support of satellite technology, emergency response operations can run more efficiently, while residents regain access to crucial information needed for safety and recovery.
