ASSI and ASIOTI Signed an MoU to Integrate Satellite and IoT for Better Connectivity

Jakarta, INTI - Indonesia's geographical challenges as an archipelagic nation remain a hurdle to achieving equitable digital access. Uneven telecommunications infrastructure means that many areas, particularly the frontier, outermost, and underdeveloped (3T) regions, still face limited connectivity.

To address these challenges, the Indonesia Satellite Association (ASSI) and the Indonesia Internet of Things Association (ASIOTI) are promoting the integration of satellite technology and the Internet of Things (IoT). This collaboration was formalized through the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) at the BATIC 2026 international forum.

The partnership aims to extend connectivity to areas difficult for terrestrial networks to reach while simultaneously boosting operational efficiency across various sectors, including agriculture, maritime, plantations, mining, and logistics.

Satellite and IoT Integration for Better Connectivity

ASSI Supervisory Board member, Budi Satria Dharma Purba, stated that the evolution of the national telecommunications industry requires the convergence of satellite technology and terrestrial digital infrastructure. 

He noted that satellites no longer serve merely as supporting or backup infrastructure. Satellites can now act as a primary solution for expanding the digital economy into areas beyond the reach of terrestrial networks.

"Industry expansion has long been hampered by the high cost of building fiber-optic or cellular infrastructure in remote regions. By integrating satellite networks, IoT devices in sectors ranging from plantations and mining to maritime operations can transmit data in real-time, regardless of location," said Budi in a statement on Wednesday, August 26, 2026.

ASIOTI Chairman, Faizal Rochmad Djoemadi, added that the growing demand for industrial automation requires stable and reliable connectivity support.

"The market demands efficient and reliable end-to-end solutions. This collaboration bridges the creativity of the local IoT device industry with the reliability of global satellite infrastructure," explained Faizal.

Interoperability and Cybersecurity Aspects

As part of this partnership, ASSI and ASIOTI have identified several strategic focus areas, one of which is interoperability. This initiative involves integrating field-based IoT devices with satellite networks to ensure connectivity for sensors located in underserved and unserved areas.

Beyond interoperability, cybersecurity is a critical aspect of developing the satellite and IoT ecosystem. Securing data from field devices to data centers is deemed essential, given that IoT technology is used to transmit vital information related to industrial operations.

"This collaboration ensures that massive technological expansion proceeds hand-in-hand with compliance regarding security standards, privacy, and user data integrity," said Faizal.

The partnership between the two associations also encompasses knowledge transfer and talent development programs. ASSI and ASIOTI agree that ecosystem development must focus not only on infrastructure construction but also on enhancing human resource capabilities to develop and operate satellite and IoT technologies.
