ITPLN Collaborates with Korea to Strengthen Energy Infrastructure through Smart Meter Technology

8 months ago | Green Industrial

Jakarta, INTI – A new collaborative initiative in smart energy technology is underway in Indonesia. This time, the PLN Institute of Technology (ITPLN), together with Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) and Tide Korea, held an international training forum titled Seminar and Training International on Official Development Assistance (ODA). The event took place over five days, from July 21 to 25, 2025, at the ITPLN Campus in West Jakarta, carrying the main theme: "Implementation of Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) in West Java, Indonesia."

Strategic Indonesia–Korea Collaboration in Energy Technology

The forum also featured a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) initiated by the Indonesian Smart Grid Initiative (PJCI) in collaboration with the Indonesian Electric Power Institute and KEPCO. PJCI Founder Eddie Widiono Soewondho emphasized the importance of utilizing digital platform technology to maximize energy data usage.

ITPLN Rector Prof. Iwa Garniwa, in his opening remarks, expressed appreciation to all involved partners and stressed the importance of strengthening technological cooperation between Indonesia and South Korea in supporting the transformation of the national electricity system.

AMI: A Smarter Energy Monitoring Solution

Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) is a smart metering system designed to replace conventional electricity meters. This technology enables customers to monitor their electricity usage in real time through a digital application. Additionally, AMI allows for remote meter reading, fault detection, and more efficient energy management.

“ITPLN and Tide Korea have implemented AMI on a laboratory scale, and we hope this technology can be widely adopted by PT PLN (Persero),” said Prof. Iwa.

He also revealed that the collaboration with Korean partners has resulted in the installation of an EV Charging Station on the ITPLN campus, as part of a broader cooperation project within the future energy ecosystem.

International Seminar: Knowledge Transfer and Energy Diplomacy

The seminar served as a platform for exchanging ideas among national and international experts. Key speakers included PLN’s Director of Distribution, Arsyadany Ghana Akmalaputri, as well as energy experts from PLN, ITPLN, ITB, and KEPCO Korea. Topics discussed included AMI and smart grid implementation, renewable energy integration, K-MDMS technology, and strategies for exporting smart meter technologies to other countries.

KEPCO Southeast Asia Chief Representative Lee Je Hyung explained that the training is part of the Korean government’s Official Development Assistance (ODA) program. He emphasized that this is not just about technology transfer, but the beginning of a long-term partnership to build a more efficient power distribution system.

Field Visit and Future Collaboration Plans

Throughout the five-day training, participants explored various technical modules and conducted a field visit to PLN's Customer Service Unit (UP3) in Bulungan to witness firsthand how the technology is being implemented on-site.

The seminar is expected to foster synergy between technological development and energy diplomacy, strengthening cooperation between Indonesia and South Korea in building a smarter, more sustainable modern electricity infrastructure.

Conclusion

The collaboration between ITPLN, KEPCO, and Tide Korea demonstrates that cross-country synergy can accelerate digital transformation in the energy sector. With technologies like AMI and smart grids, Indonesia is poised to manage electricity distribution more intelligently, efficiently, and transparently.
