Indonesia’s AI Regulations Seen as Key to Strengthening Global AI Governance

12 hours ago | Artificial Intelligence

Jakarta, INTI - Indonesia’s House of Representatives (DPR RI) is calling for the country to develop a comprehensive regulatory framework for artificial intelligence (AI) while also strengthening its participation in shaping global AI governance. The initiative is considered essential to ensure that AI not only drives innovation and digital economic growth but also protects society from emerging technological risks.

Deputy Chair of the Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Agency (BKSAP), Irine Yusiana Roba Putri, stated that AI has already influenced nearly every aspect of modern life and is playing a significant role in Indonesia’s digital transformation.

Speaking during BKSAP Day at Universitas Atma Jaya Yogyakarta on June 8, 2026, Irine highlighted the opportunities AI offers in improving service efficiency, fostering innovation, increasing productivity, supporting research, and accelerating the growth of the digital economy.

However, she emphasized that the rapid advancement of AI also presents serious challenges that cannot be overlooked. These include privacy violations, the spread of misinformation, deepfake technology, algorithmic bias, discrimination, and concerns surrounding legal accountability.

According to Irine, AI should not be viewed solely as a technological issue but also as a matter of law, democracy, human rights, and social justice.

Closing Regulatory Gaps in AI Governance

To address these challenges, Irine stressed the need for Indonesia to establish a regulatory framework capable of mitigating risks while continuing to encourage technological innovation and development.

She noted that the DPR plays a strategic role through its legislative function in ensuring the creation of a comprehensive and risk-based legal framework for AI.

Currently, Indonesia does not have a dedicated AI law. As a result, several regulatory gaps remain, particularly in areas such as AI risk classification, transparency requirements, algorithm auditing, legal liability, data protection, and public complaint mechanisms.

Irine believes these issues must be addressed to provide legal certainty while ensuring responsible AI deployment across various sectors.

Indonesia’s Role in Shaping Global AI Standards

Beyond domestic regulation, Irine underscored the importance of Indonesia actively participating in the development of international AI governance standards.

She argued that Indonesia should not merely act as a consumer of technology but should also contribute to the formulation of global AI principles and standards that align with national interests.

International organizations are currently promoting AI governance frameworks based on human rights, transparency, accountability, and meaningful human oversight of AI systems. Indonesia, she said, must ensure its voice is represented in these discussions.

Through parliamentary diplomacy, BKSAP and the DPR’s AI Working Committee have continued to build international partnerships to study best practices from other countries regarding AI regulation and governance.

Collaboration Needed for Effective AI Governance

Irine also emphasized that creating effective AI governance cannot be the responsibility of government and parliament alone.

Academic institutions and researchers play a critical role in ensuring that future AI policies strike the right balance between technological innovation and public protection. Their expertise is considered essential in developing regulations that are both effective and adaptable to the rapidly evolving AI landscape.

As Indonesia’s digital economy continues to expand, the establishment of a comprehensive AI regulatory framework is increasingly viewed as a necessary step toward ensuring responsible innovation while positioning the country as an active contributor to global AI governance.

Conclusion

Indonesia is being encouraged to accelerate the development of comprehensive AI regulations to address emerging technological risks while supporting innovation and digital economic growth. At the same time, active participation in global AI governance will be crucial to ensuring that Indonesia helps shape international standards and policies for responsible AI development.
