Jakarta, INTI - Indonesia's growing investment in artificial intelligence (AI) data centers is expected to generate thousands of new employment opportunities in the country's technology sector. The government announced that around 15,000 Indonesian engineers will be trained and recruited to support the development of semiconductor manufacturing, chip design, and AI data center infrastructure through the ecosystem of Arm Ltd, NVIDIA, and Danantara. The initiative is seen as one of the key economic benefits of increasing investments by global technology companies in Indonesia.

Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto stated that the expansion of AI data center investments will significantly increase demand for skilled technology professionals. He explained that Arm Ltd, in collaboration with NVIDIA and Danantara, is preparing to train and recruit approximately 15,000 engineers to strengthen Indonesia's semiconductor, chip, and AI data center industries. Airlangga made the remarks during the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN) Monthly Economic Diplomatic Breakfast titled Beyond Uncertainty: Building Indonesia's Next Economy on Saturday, July 18, 2026.

"The key to all of this is human capital. The President has set a target for 15,000 Indonesian engineers and professionals to become part of the Arm ecosystem," Airlangga said.

He emphasized that developing highly skilled human resources is essential for Indonesia to maximize opportunities arising from AI and digital technology investments. The presence of NVIDIA and its industry partners is expected not only to create new jobs but also to enhance the capabilities of Indonesia's technology workforce.

Airlangga noted that Indonesia offers several competitive advantages for AI data center investments, including abundant mineral resources, a young and tech-savvy workforce, and a rapidly developing semiconductor ecosystem, testing facilities, and digital infrastructure. These strengths position the country as an attractive destination for global AI investments while creating additional employment opportunities across the digital economy.

According to the Indonesian AI Industry Research and Innovation Collaboration (KORIKA), Indonesia is the fourth-largest AI market in Asia after China, India, and Japan. The country's AI market is projected to reach approximately US$70 billion, representing around 6.4% of the regional AI market potential. This substantial market opportunity is expected to attract further investments from NVIDIA and other global technology companies, creating even more jobs in the future.

NVIDIA Partnership to Expand AI Employment

The collaboration between Arm Ltd, NVIDIA, and Danantara aims to prepare Indonesian talent for the growing demands of the AI industry. The training and recruitment program for approximately 15,000 engineers is expected to support careers in semiconductor manufacturing, chip development, and AI data center operations while strengthening Indonesia's competitiveness in high-tech industries.

Renewable Energy to Support AI Data Centers

Airlangga also highlighted that AI data centers require large and reliable electricity supplies. To meet this demand, the government is accelerating renewable energy development, including large-scale solar power projects.

"Indonesia is ready to meet this demand sustainably by expanding its renewable energy architecture, with a target of deploying up to 100 GW of solar capacity and renewable energy generation over the coming decades," he said.

Indonesia currently operates 182 data centers, with 94 located in Jakarta and 16 in Batam. The continued expansion of these facilities is expected to create additional employment opportunities across construction, engineering, operations, and supporting industries.

Data Center Investment Could Reach Rp360 Trillion

Airlangga estimated that data center projects currently in the investment pipeline are valued at between US$15 billion and US$20 billion (approximately Rp270 trillion to Rp360 trillion). These investments are intended to significantly expand Indonesia's AI data center capacity.

He explained that the country currently has around 580 MW of operational data center capacity, while an additional 1.3 GW is under development, particularly in Batam, with investments valued at US$15–20 billion.

Airlangga also revealed that several companies are planning to expand data center operations in Indonesia, including Australia's Firmus Technologies in partnership with NVIDIA, as well as PT Telkom. In addition, many global technology companies are exploring large-scale data center developments in Karawang. These projects are expected to generate employment opportunities throughout both the construction and operational phases.

Government Strengthens Digital Infrastructure

Alongside workforce development and renewable energy expansion, the Indonesian government is reinforcing the country's digital infrastructure to support AI data center growth.

According to Airlangga, these efforts include expanding renewable energy capacity, deploying additional fiber-optic networks, and increasing the number of international submarine cable landing stations connecting Indonesia with Singapore and global internet networks.

"Beyond semiconductors, global connectivity is equally important. On the 20th, we will inaugurate an additional fiber-optic cable landing point connecting Batam to Singapore, strengthening Indonesia's connection to the global network," he said.

The government expects these infrastructure improvements to support continued investment from NVIDIA and other global technology companies while creating new employment opportunities across Indonesia's technology, telecommunications, and digital economy sectors.
