Jakarta, INTI - The Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Jakarta has highlighted the important role of Indonesian students pursuing higher education in China as cultural ambassadors who help strengthen bilateral relations, particularly in the education sector, while fostering long-term ties between the two nations.
Students as Bridges of Indonesia–China Relations
Education Attaché of the Chinese Embassy in Jakarta, Chen Wu, stated that Indonesian students in China are not only gaining academic knowledge and developing their personal capabilities, but also becoming the next generation responsible for continuing the friendship between Indonesia and China.
“Young people represent the future of a nation and the hope for the enduring friendship between China and Indonesia across generations,” Chen Wu said.
He noted that the strategic partnership between Indonesia and China continues to grow and has delivered various significant achievements. According to the latest data, more than 15,000 Indonesian students are currently studying at educational institutions across China.
Beyond academic learning, Indonesian students are also exposed to diverse cultural experiences that broaden their global perspectives. These experiences are expected to shape them into a new generation capable of contributing to the strengthening and expansion of Indonesia–China relations.
Educational Collaboration Drives Innovation
In addition to encouraging Indonesian students to pursue studies in China, Chen Wu emphasized the importance of strengthening partnerships between Indonesian educational institutions and Chinese universities.
According to him, closer institutional collaboration can inspire younger generations to become active drivers of cultural and educational exchanges. Cooperation between scholars and academic institutions from both countries is also expected to generate innovation and new achievements.
Chen Wu also expressed his appreciation for the China Higher Education Exhibition 2026, which introduced Indonesian students to various leading universities in China, including Peking University and Wuhan University.
Earlier in January, Indonesia’s Deputy Chief of Mission in Beijing, Parulian Silalahi, stated that Indonesian students in China represent an important diaspora community that can contribute to national development and serve as a valuable asset for Indonesia’s resilience.
Parulian added that the number of Indonesian students in China has reached around 20,000 people, returning to pre-pandemic levels, with the figure continuing to show an upward trend.
Conclusion
The growing number of Indonesian students in China reflects the strengthening educational partnership between the two countries. Beyond academic achievements, these students serve as cultural bridges that foster mutual understanding, encourage innovation, and contribute to the long-term development of Indonesia–China relations.
